Meet Tynia Pratt-Davis

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tynia Pratt-Davis a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Tynia with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?

I get my work ethic from my mother. Growing up, I always saw her working hard, and I’ve seen the things she was able to accomplish and overcome because she stayed level-headed and dedicated. Watching her made me want to be the same way. I also have this feeling inside me.. like if I’m not working, I feel lazy, like I’m not doing enough. That drive keeps me pushing forward and always looking for something productive to do.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I’m a braider and a wardrobe stylist, and I’m currently in school studying fashion. While fashion is my focus right now, braiding has always been my first love. It’s more than just a skill it’s my craft and my passion. I started braiding when I was about 9 years old, thanks to my aunt who taught me. Over time, it became a part of who I am.

At 15, I found myself falling in love with fashion. I’ve always had an eye for style, but it wasn’t until later that I realized I could turn that into a career. Now, I’m balancing both worlds running two businesses while pursuing my degree. It’s not always easy, and there are definitely long nights and early mornings, but when it comes to getting things done, I always make it happen.

What’s most exciting about what I do is being able to help people feel confident in their own skin whether it’s through a fresh set of braids or a styled look that brings out their personality. My brand is all about authenticity, creativity, and showing up as your best self.

There’s a lot in the works for me right now from growing my client base to developing ideas for future styling events and creative projects. I’m just getting started, and I can’t wait to share more with the world.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

When it comes to hair and growing your presence on social media, I believe the three most important keys are patience, practice, and staying consistent online. Social media plays a huge role in boosting your career it’s not just about posting pictures, it’s about building a brand, connecting with your audience, and keeping up with what’s trending. You have to stay in the loop with the latest hairstyles and techniques, because the industry is always evolving.

Patience is major, especially in the beginning when you’re still building your skills and your name. Nothing happens overnight, and the real growth comes from being dedicated even when you don’t see instant results. Practice, of course, is everything. The more you braid, style, or create, the more confident and skilled you become. Every client, every post, every challenge is a chance to level up.

My advice to anyone just starting out is to push yourself to be better than you were yesterday. Don’t get too comfortable there’s always room to grow. Whether it’s watching tutorials, taking classes, or just practicing on a mannequin head, do everything in your power to sharpen your skills. Stay hungry, stay focused, and remember that your journey is your own. As long as you’re putting in the work, the results will come.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

The most impactful thing my mother has ever done for me is simply being there and being herself. Watching her be true to who she is has shaped me into the woman I am today. Her strength, her ambition, and her ability to push through anything has always inspired me. She didn’t have to do anything flashy just her presence, her drive, and the way she carries herself have taught me some of the most important life lessons.

She’s taught me how to move with confidence, how to carry myself with grace, and how to handle whatever life throws at me. The way I live my day-to-day life is a reflection of the values she’s poured into me. That lady is truly unstoppable whatever she puts her mind to, she goes after it with everything she has.

Her ambition is unmatched, and just being raised by someone like her made me believe that I can do anything I set my mind to. I’m forever grateful for her love, her lessons, and the example she continues to set for me every single day.
