We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Alexa Allamano. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Alexa below.
Alexa, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
For as long as I can remember, I’ve always had a “watch me” kind of attitude. An internal drive where every shut door and no answer was taken as a challenge and redirection rather than a crushing defeat. It’s the type of quality essential to finding sustained success in a tumultuous world.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Since 2017, I’ve been a jewelry designer, handcrafting pieces for refined sea lovers under my brand name Foamy Wader. Rather than use my own name for the brand, I opted for a nickname of mine that also represents the seaside aesthetic of my work. My style is a mix of nautical influences with a minimalist perspective. Creating easy-to-wear pieces that evoke the feeling of the seashore.
We also prioritize sustainability in our business practices. We not only use primarily recycled precious metals but also recycle all scraps back into the supply chain, use eco-friendly packaging, and offset carbon emissions for shipments. Furthering our commitment to sustainability, we offer custom inclusive sizing, free repairs for life on our pieces, and jewelry repair services to our community. Proudly woman-owned and operated. We also offer popular “permanent jewelry” with a selection of sterling silver/gold filled chains and heirloom 14K Gold, cut to fit the wearer perfectly and welded in our waterside shop.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I learned early how to structure my business as an LLC to be legally protected, how to maintain a curiosity for learning new techniques in my craft, and a willingness to start fresh.
Seek out mentors and colleagues in the people who inspire you. If you are the smartest and most knowledgeable person in the room, you should find new rooms to learn within.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I built this business with a foundation of strong retail-partnerships — some of which have been maintained since 2012! It’s always a delight to work with a new retailer. Our collection can be ordered through faire.com/direct/foamywader
