Meet TK Henderson

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to TK Henderson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

TK, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.

I was at a point in my life where I had fully surrendered to God and His will for my life. One random day, I stepped out of the shower and heard an audible voice say, ‘Write a movie’. I was stunned. I don’t think I had ever heard anyone talk about God speaking to them that way. I worked as an extra on TV and film sets but that was the extent of it. So, I ignored the thought. Two weeks later, a story had developed in my head causing me sleepless nights to the point I had to pull out plain old notebook paper and start writing. I then found a screenwriting class where I learned the basics and about the tools I would need for the journey. I wrote my first feature and decided to put it in a competition in Hollywood. The script made it into the top 20% of 2500. From there, I was given the idea to raffle off jewelry for special days like Valentine’s and Mother’s Day to raise money to attend conferences in L.A. to learn my craft.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

Writing scripts from different voices and across several genres is a true gift. I have credits on award-winning films and stage plays such as, ‘Steps of Faith’, ‘A Heart That Forgives’, ‘Juneteenth’, ‘Watch Night’ and ‘Soul Purpose’.  Currently, I am seeking funding for my first original feature film, ‘Jade’s Heart’. It’s a dark drama about generational hurt and pain. Although other successful independent films have had higher budgets, such as the most recent Oscar-winning, ‘Anora’, at $6 million, our budget mimics last year’s winner, ‘American Fiction’, at $1.8 million. Having a proper budget in place allows us to produce a high-quality film and allocate funds for publicity and advertising. I’m so excited to share this project with the world!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

1. Listen – Sometimes we try to figure out our purpose on our own. If God created us, don’t you think He knows why?
2. Obey – Just do it! He has our best interest at heart and will not lead us wrong.
3. Shut Out The Noise – If God didn’t call a press conference to tell everyone what He told you, they’re not going to understand and a lot of times, suggest that you go a different route or use a different method.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

Everything doesn’t happen in a traditional way. When the waiting gets long and frustrating, I journal. I let everything out and surrender to the day. I have to remind myself of what God has told me and that if I do my part, He will do His.
