We were lucky to catch up with Jamie Ferriman recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jamie, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
I have been a very creative person my whole life. My teacher discovered my talent for art in 3rd grade. I am very artistic. I love to draw, paint, DIY projects and interior decorating. When I discovered candle making it opened a whole new version in me. Now, I will be honest creativity is natural in me, but sometimes I do struggle creating a new candle design. Usually when I find a scent that catches my attention the images of designs and names flood my brain. Sometimes, it’s just a blank wall and the fragrance sits on my shelf. If this happens, I wait patiently for an idea to hit and then I go and find a scent that will match the theme. The names behind my candles have a background behind them. Each candle tells just a little part of our daughter Bridgett, whom we lost in 2022. Whether it be the name of someone in her life, an object or animal she loved, or even a moment. My favorite ones are the inspirational quotes that I wished she would have heard more often like “You are Enough”, “You Matter”. If I have a creativity block, I usually sit back and go through her life to see what other things can I express for her and it hits me. Sometimes it’s an hour or so, sometimes it’s a couple of days.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
In 2022 our family went through a tragedy that no family should ever have to experience. We lost one of our daughters named Bridgett by her own hand. We were devastated to say the least. I was spiraling downwards fast. My husband was trying to help me but unfortunately, he was not successful. He then recommended I pick up a hobby for distraction. I was reading an article about a high school kid making candles for a side hustle. That’s when the idea hit me of making candles for a hobby. Bridgett, her dad and I would go to other candle stores when out shopping and spend hours in just one store smelling each candle at least 2-3 times. It was our favorite hobby as a family. I researched the process for a couple of months learning the ins and outs, pros and cons, and so forth. I started buying materials and playing around in my craft room. I made some for my household, then family and friends. It then moved to my place of work. The response I was getting was overwhelming. Everyone loved them. I then branched out and looked into making natural bath products for people with skin allergies and conditions. Our oldest is allergic to many store-bought bath products. Bridgett used to try to create clean and natural products to grow hair, help her skin and more. I combined the two ideas and created the category Delightful, Aromatic and Natural Bath Essentials named after my dad that we lost in 2024. I decided to use all natural ingredients in all my products. I wanted to provide my family, friends and clients with a clean natural alternative in candle and bath products.
I have had 4 magazines that have written articles about me such as: Shoutout DFW, Canvas Rebel, Formidable Woman US by Celebrity Writer, Jules Lavallee, and others. I have more coming soon including but not limited to Empowered Entrepreneur Magazine and Authority just to name a few. I have been nominated by Marquee’s Who’s Who of Professional Women. Just recently, I was awarded the Top Candle Designer and Owner of 2025 by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP). When I mention this to people I want them to understand this just means I am doing my job and getting my brand recognized and spreading the word.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
There are so many important qualities, skills, and areas of knowledge that go behind everything you do. I will focus on the three that I believe help the most. Communication, Patience and Perseverance.
Communication not only is limited to staff but customers as well. I have attended many events, craft fairs and so on. I wanted to do this to get feedback from random customers. When a customer walks into my booth the first thing I hear is “Wow! It smells so good over here! I could smell you from way over there!” That answers my first question of how they smell. Then the customers walk over to the candles and start browsing. They turn to me and say one or all of these “Do you make all of these? You are so talented. They are too pretty to burn. This would make a great gift!” That answers the design aspect questions.
Patience is honestly probably the hardest thing for me. Like most people I want to grow and grow fast. However, after being a part of a previous business with my husband, I learned that it’s not always a good idea. If you grow fast and don’t have the manpower, finances, and experience at the next level it will hurt you in the long run. Your company should grow at a reasonable pace so that way you can grow with it, instead of running after it trying to catch up.
Last but not the least is Perseverance. Perseverance is a hard task to keep going. This is where a lot of people struggle. Being out there constantly pushing, talking, showing, asking, and doing whatever it takes to get your brand out there. At first, the spark is alive and bright, and your energy matches that. After a while, the spark starts dying off and you start getting tired. You are working so hard to get your brand acknowledged but you aren’t seeing much feedback. You start thinking to yourself. Is this worth it? Should I keep going? Everything I am doing is not helping. Well, I can tell you it is. Things are happening in the background, and you can’t see it. Imagine a welder out mending fences. He is just welding away, and sparks are flying everywhere. That’s your hard work scattering. Then one of those little bitty sparks lands with just enough heat to catch a blade on fire. You don’t see this happening behind you. That little blade of grass now has touched other blades around it and the fire starts spreading. That is word of mouth. After a while it spreads, then it spreads faster. Next thing you know, the whole field is on fire. It happens that fast. At first, you don’t see any evidence that what you are doing is sparking, until you turn around one day, and it’s exploded, and you just stand there in awe. So, if you believe what you are doing is not working, just keep pushing and soon you will see just how big it got when you turn around.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
The success I have accomplished thus far is due to several people. First and foremost, my husband David Ferriman. He has been the rock of support, the backbone of when my burnouts happen and helps keep me motivated when I get tired and discouraged. He has helped me in so many ways. He brags on me all the time. Talk to people about my products. Help me with shipping orders, trade shows, craft fairs and events. He is by best spokesman.
The two other people I feel so grateful for being in my life and inspiration are my dad Dan Crist and our daughter Bridgett Moore. My dad requested something from me that I still live by every day and that is to stay grounded and humble. He asked, “No matter how big you grow or how famous you become just to stay grounded.” He reminded me that being grounded and humble makes life simpler and will attract more people. You will get so far in life respecting and acknowledging others’ values, including your own.
Our daughter, Bridgett, was all about helping people. She had an unmatchable passion for people. When we lost her in 2022, I took her passion as a duty to keep moving. My goal with this business is by no means to get rich. My goals are to help people by providing another way to get healthy and natural products that are affordable to everyone as well as help charities that help and give resources to in troubled times by donating part of the proceeds.
Another person who has helped me so much that doesn’t realize it, even today, is our oldest son, Daniel Hayes. He was the inspiration behind my bath products. He is allergic to a lot of store-bought bath products. I wanted to provide him with everyday products to use to make his life easier. Every time I create a new product; he is my tester. If it passes him and myself then it gets added to my Delightful, Aromatic, and Natural Bath Essential collection which was named after my father when we lost him in 2024.
Last but not least is the rest of my kids and our friends. They all have helped me by supporting me, helping me make products to fulfill orders, spreading the word about my products and so many other ways. I am truly a blessed person and could never repay them for all the help and for being in my life.
