Meet Lisa Liles

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lisa Liles a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Lisa, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?

I love this question.
Growing up, I always had to master having a poker face. Having to bounce back from the toughest of situations can bring out anger in a person, or generosity.
After having a parent that was sick for most of my life, I taught myself how to be strong for both of us. During the most intense times – I always worked multiple jobs, went to school, and probably picked the relationships I did thinking I deserved to be treated poorly.
I couldn’t always be there in the ways I needed to be for family. Survival mode and fight or flight was a constant. I wouldn’t change any of it for the world. I may have regrets, but I’ve made peace with the past.
Now I’m able to take my real life experiences, and I help women and children get out of similar situations that have turned domestically abusive. The bond and family that I’m able to create with them is something that will fulfill me for the rest of my life. I know the person that has passed would be proud of who I’ve become.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

Although originally Pilates certified, through my own injury I found a new path. I started working with several trainers that have become mentors to me. This has helped me create my own twist on Pilates. My flows have more functional movements throughout them, thanks to my education with Gait Happens and the Mobo Board. I have more confidence in my career, and training a variety of bodies – whether it be an athlete, injury recovery, or anything in between. I love helping clients find a better quality of life.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I was thrown to the wolves after my original training. Now I help trainers discover their style and develop a deeper knowledge for teaching classes. Get a mentor! I wish I had someone early on that wanted to see me grow as much as I want to see other teachers grow.

My education with Gait Happens has had a huge impact on my teaching skills. Clients and teachers can both take courses, which is huge. Of course use my code PIRATE79 when you check them out 🙂

Never stop learning … get as close as you can to feeling in your own body what a client can feel. This can change everything, including how to cue which is a skill in itself.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

Always! Teachers, clients – anyone looking to start or continue their journey.
Anyone interested in helping in my journey to advocate for women coming out of domestic violence are a welcome bonus.
