We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Diane Hemmersbaugh. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Diane below.
Hi Diane, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I believe that finding purpose is often a lifelong pursuit, one that changes and evolves as we grow. For me, the path to interior design was anything but linear, but it was always guided by a deep desire to help others and make a meaningful impact.
From a young age, I knew that I wanted to make a difference in people’s lives. This passion initially led me to pursue a degree in elementary education, followed by a master’s in counseling, with the intention of working with children and adolescents. Yet, life had other plans.
A move to the D.C. metro area led me to a position on Capitol Hill, where I discovered the power of policy-making in shaping and improving lives. A decade of working in public policy followed. But something was missing for me —the personal, tangible connection with people. I returned to school for another master’s degree, this time in Infant Special Education, allowing me to work directly with children and families.
Then came another life change—motherhood. I chose to stay at home to raise our two children, and during this time my husband and I purchased a fixer-upper home. I collaborated with an interior designer who became a friend and mentor while helping me to transform our home. Before we completed the space, she relocated, and I continued the house projects on my own. A love of all things design was born, and I realized the importance of a well-designed home—not just as a beautiful space, but as a sanctuary.
I went back to school once again to pursue a certificate in interior design and then started my own interior design business in 2019. While I couldn’t have imagined that my desire when I was young to help people and make a difference would lead to this career, or that the path would take such twists and turns, it feels right and as though I’m where I’m meant to be.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
What makes interior design truly special? For me, the answer lies in creating homes that feel like a haven. More than just choosing furniture or selecting color palettes, my work is about crafting spaces that evoke warmth, comfort, and a sense of belonging. A thoughtfully designed space doesn’t just look beautiful—it enhances everyday life, inspiring moments of connection, reflection, and presence with the people and things we love.

The most fulfilling part of my work is seeing the impact on clients’ lives. Hearing from clients after a project is complete is the most rewarding feeling. When they tell me they’re using and loving a space that was once overlooked, it reaffirms why I do what I do.
The pandemic reinforced this philosophy, highlighting the importance of a home that nurtures and restores. That period made so many of us realize just how vital it is to have a home that feels like a sanctuary. Now, more than ever, people want spaces that bring comfort, beauty, and a sense of peace.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back on the path that led to Theo & Co. Design, I recognize a few key qualities that have been instrumental. These traits—listening and connection, collaboration, and leadership—have shaped my approach to design.
1. Listening and Connection
At the heart of any great design is an understanding of the client’s vision. For me, the ability to truly listen and connect with people has been invaluable. We all want to be seen, heard, and understood—especially when we’re trying to bring a vision to life. Whether working with design clients or in my previous careers, a warm, approachable, and genuine manner has fostered connection and strong relationships.
2. Collaboration
Great design doesn’t happen in isolation—it’s the result of collaboration. Throughout my career, I have seen firsthand how essential collaboration is to professional success. The ability to be a team player is crucial. Just as someone who struggles with teamwork can hinder progress, a strong team player has the power to elevate an entire project. This mindset has been a guiding force in working with clients, contractors, and tradespeople to bring designs to life.
3. Leadership
Throughout my career, leadership has played a pivotal role in my journey. From inspiring clients with a clear vision to managing projects, leadership skills have helped ensure successful outcomes.
Suggestion for others on their journeys: I believe that self-awareness is key to professional and personal growth. Understanding your strengths and recognizing areas for improvement is crucial. Leaning into what you do best while seeking support in areas of challenge can make all the difference in building a fulfilling career.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me and my siblings was teaching by example. Through their actions and how they treated others, they showed us the importance of compassion and how to treat people well. The name of my business, Theo & Co., was inspired by my father, Theodore Baranik, to continue his legacy of giving to others, He served in public office because he was convinced that one person can make a difference. He also volunteered on numerous boards, but his greatest impact was as a source of inspiration and support to everyone around him.
In order to continue that legacy, at the completion of each design project, Theo & Co. makes a contribution to an organization such as A Wider Circle that assists and empowers people in need. I believe that a thoughtful design can truly make a difference, both in people’s lives and in the community.
