We were lucky to catch up with Carolyn Marsh recently and have shared our conversation below.
Carolyn, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
Home Health Hair is a 20 year vision that is finally complete!
22 years ago, Atlanta, Ga (where I’m from) my first job was a CNA in Home Health. One of my patients said to me one day “I wish someone would come to my house and do my hair”……. Light bulb went on. As soon as I graduated Highschool I went into Cosmetology school. After Cosmetology school I started Home Health Hair. Like a side hustle. I worked Home Health, I worked in a salon, I worked however I could fit it in. I’ve always had more than one job!
10 years ago, I came across some very challenging obstacles. Why couldn’t I lift Home Health Hair up from just a side hustle? Why was I having challenges communicating with Health Care organizations? I even had an opportunity to be interviewed on a TV show! Why wasn’t Home Health Hair more profitable? Simultaneously, my husband got offered a job in Cincinnati and we moved. It made sense to close shop and take a break.
I had a chance to reevaluate why my business failed in Atlanta.
I started looking at the degrees, education, and experience of the people I was trying to do business with. I felt sub par. On paper, I look like “just a Hair stylist”…….. I needed to go to school.
I struggled communicating …… There is a Health Care language that needs to be spoken to accurately address the families needs and an organizations needs. I needed to learn this.
I also needed to rebrand Home Health Hair…… Home Health Hair is the 4th name… lol.
The population I serve also needed a better qualified professional to cater to their specific Hair, Nail, and Skin care needs with a Holistic approach as there are so many other health needs happening.
Becoming a Registered Nurse, is the Cherry on top! I am beyond grateful that Xavier accepted me into their ABSN program to help me accomplish my professional goals to serve Cincinnati’s most vulnerable population.
For example, I had the opportunity to do hair for someone in an ICU unit at a Hospital in Cincinnati. The family found me online in a Google search. This patient was hooked up to ventilation, continuous feed, continuous monitors, drips etc. I would have never been able to confidently care for this patient before. How do you do hair for some with all this going on……safely?
Now, I know what all the things are the patient is hooked up to, I know how to move the bed, I know how to call for help, I know how to call for a rapid, etc. if the ventilator popped off I could reattach it and call the nurse. Xavier ABSN gave me that confidence.
Theres so many other examples too.
Currently I have an on-going vendor partnership with TriHealth (HOC) Hospice of Cincinnati. (3 years)
I have a salon inside of Celebration Villa Highland Heights in Kentucky. (3 years)
I cater salon services to those who are Bedbound, Home Health, Hospice, Hospitals, senior living, any medical or mobility challenge that prevents them from being able to go to a salon.
I am proud to say it is no longer a side hustle! I offered over 600 services last year! (During Nursing School…..😅)
I am no longer “just a Hair Stylist.” I am so excited what 2025 brings as I have the knowledge, skills, experience, education, language, title, and opportunity to cater the salon experience to those who are experiencing medical and mobility challenges. To be able to bring joy, for a brief moment in someone’s life, to take their mind of their health challenges and life’s struggles is my purpose and passion. When life’s basic needs become a luxury it means the world to them to get a shampoo (with real water, not a shampoo cap)…..and a haircut! I’m honored to be able to personalize and cater to each one’s needs!
