We recently connected with Rikki Sushaun and have shared our conversation below.
Rikki , so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
Oh that’s easy, I’m the stereotypical middle child! Though it is a bit more complicated than that because I’m also the oldest.
I believe it was in the cards for me all along to be a bold and charismatic individual. Not that I’ve ever felt I needed to prove anything to anybody, but more so, I have always had this understanding that life is whatever you make of it.
I have a motto, every person is a “collectible item”… because there’s only 1 of you that exists on the entire planet.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’d always gravitated towards the arts. I was a band geek for most of my primary years and even got a couple of scholarships to pursue acting after high school. However 18 year old me simply wasn’t ready to keep spending my days sitting behind a desk and taking notes. So I went off and got a job, joined a few local bands around the DFW and just lived!
I eventually went back to school and acquired an A.A.S in culinary arts and worked in the hospitality industry for many years. It wasn’t until 2016 when one of my regular customers who happened to be a ticketmaster at the Windsor Opera House here in Dallas, invited myself along with other crew members to a show that turned out to be “The Book of Mormon” musical. It was great! To this day it’s still one of my favorite musicals. We even got a tour behind stage and met a few of the actors on the touring circuit.
As I walked across that stage, with the curtains down and the lights still up; something hit me like a ton of bricks! “This is what you’re meant to do”, I heard IT call to me. “This is what you are meant to do!”
Within the next few weeks I had signed up for acting classes, acquired headshots and started auditioning for any film project I could find.
Currently I have a focus on musical theater and stage performance, though I love both mediums. My next performance will take place at the Lakeside Theater, performing in the groundbreaking show ‘Cry Havoc’.
My website rikkisushaun.com has all my upcoming events and showcases some of my works.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I feel three key qualities and skills of being a performer:
Is to truly know yourself and understand that the only competition is you vs. you.
Constant study of your craft allows you to keep falling in love with your craft.
And have fun! Being a stage performer or performer in general can sometimes be a bit nerve-racking. No matter how much you train, or love what you do, if you are being genuine, you’re always going to experience “butterflies”. So go out there and have fun!
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
It’s tricky, because we don’t ever seek out to feel overwhelmed but of course living this Human experience it comes naturally. When I get overwhelmed I feel irritated, aggravated just plain sick and tired.
To combat this most often I will find a quiet place, even if it’s just laying in my bed, close my eyes, turn off the TV, put the phone away and focus on the breath. Focus on the next steps forward and leave the footprints behind.
