Meet Erin Meyer

We were lucky to catch up with Erin Meyer recently and have shared our conversation below.

Erin, thrilled to have you on the platform as I think our readers can really benefit from your insights and experiences. In particular, we’d love to hear about how you think about burnout, avoiding or overcoming burnout, etc.

I worked in food security and sustainability for more than 8 years directing food rescue programs and food pantries. I was passionate, driven, and committed to my mission, but over time, I started to feel the weight of constant stress, exhaustion, and the emotional toll of fighting an uphill battle. The difficult work coupled with eco-anxiety, a pandemic and a traumatic event led to burnout and a health crisis. I pulled myself through with self-accountability and family support and love. This ultimately inspired a career shift into health coaching in order to help people avoid and overcome burnout, to hold people accountable to improving their health with a focus on nutrition, stress relief, sleep and mindfulness and to help people through their own career changes.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

The mission with my coaching business is to support activists, helpers, and professionals reach their health and career goals while avoiding burnout, thriving and becoming more effective through science-backed research, tools, inward reflection and mindfulness.

My goal this year is to expand and take on more clients to help more people. This is not entirely altruistic. I credit my work helping others as part of what got me through my own burnout. A side benefit is getting paid to do it, of course.

About My Services:
– Sessions are 20-30 minutes long typically
– For behavior change, meeting weekly or every other week is ideal

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Looking back, three key qualities and skills have been impactful in my journey from burnout to health coaching are:

1. Self-Awareness & The HALT Method for Better Habits and Avoiding Burnout
Why It Was Impactful: Many of our daily habits—especially around food, movement, and stress—are driven by emotions rather than actual needs. One of the most effective tools I use (and my clients have found great success with) is the HALT method, which stands for Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired. Often, we think we need a sugar fix, another coffee, or to push through exhaustion, but what we actually need is food, connection, rest, or emotional regulation. By pausing to identify the root cause of a craving or behavior, we can make choices that serve our long-term well-being instead of reacting impulsively.

Advice: Start using HALT as a habit check-in. Before grabbing a snack, skipping a workout, or scrolling endlessly on your phone, ask yourself if one of these four states is at play. Meeting that core need first helps create sustainable, mindful habits rather than reactive ones.

2. Know Thyself & Your Values—And Stick to Them
Why It Was Impactful: When I burned out, it wasn’t just from overwork—it was from misalignment. I was saying “yes” to things that didn’t match my core values out of financial need, which led to resentment and exhaustion. Once I got the courage to leave my work that was no longer values aligned—I stopped wasting energy on things that drained me and started building a career that fueled me.

Advice: Define your non-negotiables. What do you stand for? What kind of work energizes you? What are you willing to walk away from? When your actions align with your values, work becomes meaningful instead of exhausting.

3. Find Joy & Humor in the Smallest Things
Why It Was Impactful: Burnout can thrive in seriousness. When I started finding humor in the little things, I realized how much lighter life felt. I especially love puns, which keep me grounded and remind me not to take everything so seriously.

Advice: Seek out the small joys in everyday life. Whether it’s a funny meme, a pun that makes you groan, or a moment of gratitude, these tiny sparks of joy add up. And since I can’t resist, here’s one for you: Health coaching is all about small, sustainable changes… after all, you can’t “beet” consistency!

Final Thought:
If you’re just starting your journey, be patient with yourself. Burnout isn’t a sign of failure—it’s a sign that something needs to change. Stay curious, stay aligned with your values, and don’t forget to laugh along the way.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

Yes, I’m always open to collaboration and partnership opportunities! I believe in the power of supporting others in their personal growth and well-being, and I’m particularly interested in partnering with individuals and organizations who are passionate about health coaching, wellness, and personal development.

I’m looking to collaborate with:

Health and wellness professionals – Whether you’re a coach, therapist, or wellness practitioner, I’m interested in exploring how we can support each other’s clients.

Nonprofits focused on food rescue and sustainability – If your organization is working on food insecurity, sustainability, or community health, I’d love to collaborate to provide coaching and wellness support for your team, staff, or volunteers. Helping those who are dedicating their lives to these causes stay healthy and avoid burnout is something I’m deeply passionate about.

Corporations or businesses with a wellness focus – If your company is prioritizing wellness initiatives for employees or looking to integrate holistic health practices into your workplace, I’d love to offer coaching services that focus on stress management, work-life balance, and overall well-being.
