Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mayra. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Mayra, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Finding my purpose was a journey that unfolded through many different ventures. I’ve always had a deep desire to help others, and over the years, I explored several avenues, including personal training, massage therapy, hair cutting, the medical field, and nutrition. While each of these paths was rewarding in its own way, none had the same profound impact on both my clients and myself as cosmetic tattooing did. It wasn’t until I discovered this field that I truly felt I was making a lasting difference, and it was then I realized I had found my true passion. Although the journey took years, I’m incredibly grateful to have found a career that aligns so perfectly with my purpose and brings me joy every day.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
As a cosmetic tattoo artist, I specialize in enhancing natural beauty through eyebrow, eyeliner, and lip tattooing. My services include Microblading and various brow techniques, lip blush and neutralization, as well as eyeliner tattoos. I also offer fine line tattoos, creating small, delicate designs that help women express themselves through meaningful body art. In addition, I provide paramedical tattooing services, such as scar and stretch mark cover-ups, scalp pigmentation, and areola pigmentation, helping individuals heal and regain confidence.
What makes my work truly special is my motto: “less is more.” I believe in creating natural, subtle results that enhance my clients’ beauty while ensuring that their healed outcomes look effortless and timeless. I take a meticulous approach to design, carefully considering not just the immediate effect but the long-term results as well. With my background in the medical field, health, safety, and sanitation are top priorities for me, which is why my clients trust me to care for even the smallest details.
My brand is about more than just cosmetic tattooing; it’s about healing through paramedical tattooing and offering a way for people to express themselves with fine line tattoos. Whether it’s enhancing natural beauty, providing a path to emotional healing, or helping clients make a statement with art, my work is focused on creating positive transformations.
I’m also excited to announce that I will soon be offering training for my services, both in person and online. I’m thrilled about this new opportunity, as it allows me to not only continue helping my clients but also teach others how to do the same, expanding the reach of this art form and making a positive impact in even more lives.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, there are three key qualities that I believe had the most impact on my journey:
Flexibility and Amendability: In this industry, like in life, things don’t always go as planned, and challenges are inevitable. Whether it’s a setback with a client, an unexpected hurdle in my business, or a tough learning moment, being flexible and able to adjust to those challenges is crucial. I’ve learned that it’s not about avoiding hardships, but how you adapt and keep moving forward. For those early in their journey, I advise embracing flexibility and staying open to change—sometimes the best opportunities come from unexpected circumstances.
Communication and Asking for Help: I was raised to be strong and independent, which is valuable, but it also led me to struggle with asking for help or effectively communicating when I needed it. Over time, I realized that good communication is essential, especially in a field where you work closely with clients and other professionals. Being able to clearly express yourself, ask for help when needed, and ensure that you’re understood can make all the difference. For those starting out, don’t be afraid to reach out, ask questions, and communicate clearly with others in your industry. Collaboration and learning from others is an important part of growth.
Commitment to Learning, Practicing, and Evolving: Mastering the foundational skills of your craft is essential, but it’s just as important to continue evolving. The world and the industry are constantly changing, with new techniques, trends, and safety practices emerging all the time. Staying committed to learning, practicing, and keeping up with the latest developments helps ensure you stay relevant and provide the best possible service to your clients. My advice to those starting out is to never stop learning—seek out resources, attend workshops, and always be open to evolving your skills to stay ahead.
By focusing on flexibility, effective communication, and a commitment to continuous learning, you’ll not only thrive in this industry but also build a resilient foundation for long-term success.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
I am incredibly grateful for several people who have played pivotal roles in helping me overcome challenges and build the skills and qualities needed for success.
First and foremost, my husband Cris has been my biggest supporter from the very beginning. He has always encouraged me to pursue my passion and has been there to help me navigate every challenge along the way. His perspective on tough situations often helps me see things in a new light, and his love, support, and unwavering belief in my success have been vital to my journey. He’s one of the main reasons I’ve been able to keep going, even when things got tough.
I also want to express my gratitude to my babysitters—my mom and sisters. Without their support in helping care for my children, it would have been much harder to manage both my family and my business. Beyond their help with childcare, they’ve also provided valuable insights into the business. Whether it’s feedback on how the business looks from a client’s perspective, testing new techniques on them, or simply offering their advice, they have always been there to lend a hand.
Lastly, I can’t forget the other friends and fellow business owners I’ve had the privilege of connecting with. Sharing ideas, discussing challenges and triumphs, and motivating one another has been essential for my growth. Collaborating with other like-minded individuals has taught me so much, and having a supportive network of people who understand the ups and downs of being a small business owner has been invaluable.
In the end, having a positive network, both personal and professional, has made all the difference. I truly believe that learning and growing in business is a collaborative effort, and I am thankful to have such an incredible support system behind me
