Meet Brady Foley

We were lucky to catch up with Brady Foley recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Brady, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?

As a photographer it was definitely hard in the beginning to put my work out there for people to see and judge, especially online. I wasn’t super confident with my style or even simple things like editing. At one point I had probably deleted more post than I had even made and wiped all my memory cards because I was convinced a “fresh start” was what I needed. I had placed way too much importance in the reception of my work and far too little importance on how much I enjoyed what i was making. The thing that got me over that was letting go of what other people thought of my work and only putting value in how it makes me feel. I stopped caring about trying to follow a trend or fit into a bubble and made the work I want to make. Through that ive been able to gain the confidence to shoot concerts and promote my work to my local audience and the accounts have been growing ever since. So to sum it up don’t let your confidence come from others find it in yourself.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

My name is Brady Foley, I’m a New England based travel/nature/concert photographer. My brand Half Tongue has been serving the greater Boston area for the better part of two years now while I personally am going on five years of freelance work. I got around to photography a bit later than all my friends around the age of seventeen when I bought my first camera. I started small, just shooting things around my school and while I was out on walks, but it quickly turned into much more than a hobby. I absolutely loved the way I was able get my ideas out into the world with just a couple clicks. The next year in school i joined a photography and film class both of which only made me fall deeper into this new world I had found. Within that same year, I began my first account, Naturas Amantis, to post my growing gallery. At first it was great will plenty of new followers and support, but I soon began to doubt myself and my work immensely. I would post one thing just to delete three others the same day, or id make a trendy video only to take it down a week later. I wasn’t happy with the work I was putting out because it just didn’t feel like mine. Eventually I was able to see I needed to get back to making the things I wanted and not what I thought would trend and do numbers. So, i took down everything except what I was proud of and began to post with 100% confidence. Ever since then Naturas Amantis has been growing steadily. About a year or two back, I began to branch out into other forms of photography. I started taking more abstract and “unique” photos as well as starting my break into the concert scene. It started small with me just pulling up to local shows and hoping they would let me in with my camera. I was able to shoot a couple shows like that and get my name out there which opened up even more opportunity’s. My big break was being invited to take videos at a skate park show in Boston where two of my videos gained twenty thousand plus views. Now with two more photographers Half Tongue has had the pleasure of shooting festivals, albums releases, and promo videos for bands we both love and respect. As of recent we have also been selling short film scripts under the half tongue name and plan on branching deeper into that marked soon!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Self-confidence, want, integrity

Without self-confidence your work will suffer and subsequently so will you, put yourself out there and find what makes you tick

Want- If you truly want something then let nothing stand in your way, no matter how unobtainable something feels it’s always still within reach.

integrity- stay true to yourself, don’t sell out because it’s the easy way Take the harder path because its far more rewarding

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?

Our current challenge at Half Tongue is getting out short films funded, we have sold 3 scripts and have 3 of our own but we want to wait and do it right with a good budget
