We were lucky to catch up with Amol Ramani recently and have shared our conversation below.
Amol, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
I come from a filmmaking background and so I was always used to looking at others through a lens. When it was my turn to act, I was extremely under confident and I never saw myself as fit for the screen. Most of it had to do with how I perceived myself, my insecurities and my seeming flaws. I had two major realizations in my journey that helped overcome these factors and immensely boosted my confidence and self esteem. One was, I put my head down and kept working hard to get cast, assuming that I’d always be a second choice. It paid off in the form of over one hundred acting projects in the course of one short year. Most of them being lead roles, might I add. The second factor was an internal realization, filmmakers cast you because they want their films to look good. End of the day, only you can be you. So be a fool! Make different choices and know that you’ll be loved for it!

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m a storyteller, always have been one. To me, how I tell it is secondary. And therefore I resort to every medium that I can. My love for acting is relatively new and I’ve been fortunate enough to not be typecast. Name a role, chances are, I’ve played it and that’s something I will always be grateful for.
When I’m not acting, I have helped produce and co write numerous films. Especially as a Creative Producer, bringing to the screen what essentially begins as an idea limited by the constraints of a budget.
End of the day, we all need stories, we all love stories. I consider myself a humble servant, eternally dedicated to the cause.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Hard work:
I may sound like a broken record telling you nothing new but it’s true. There is no substitute for hard work. Even if you were born into it, there’s no guarantee you’re going to stay there. If it’s not you, it’ll be a thousand others hungrier than you.
Networking:
The contacts you build now are the ones that’ll go a long way. You will never see it coming. Someday you run into a writer in a coffee shop, chat a bit and a few years later they’ll pull you onto a 200 million dollar franchise because they liked the perfume you were wearing.
Be nice:
This industry has earned a bad rep for being ruthless and therefore makes it daunting for any newcomer. Let me tell you, most of the projects I got, were simply because they enjoyed my company on set. Make yourself useful, be kind, it’s free. The payback? A healthier environment for everyone to work in.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
This is NOT a job application! I’m always on the lookout for people who are willing to push the envelope no matter the aspect of storytelling. I do not fear taking risks and as such always admire people who share the same approach. End of the day, we’re here to create new stories, share our lives and connect with people. I’m quirky and I love people who match my crazy.
