We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tristan Roland a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tristan , appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
Creativity can flourish and wither in a fleeting moment. Whether by pure happenstance or forcing oneself to indulge in the creative play of curiosities. Life as we know it can be enriched with inspirations or void of all imaginative pleasures. It is the role of the subjected to break free of their social parameters and the norms in which we are encased in. You ask how? Resist, push boundaries, carve out time for your mind to optimize in abnormalities and find yourself out of comfort zones. At such times one can contemplate the series of measures one has adopted when processing an experience as a means of finding a new light. Shake the foundation, challenge your perceptions and fear little of making mistakes. It is in the unknown that has the potential to reinvigorate creativity.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
As a conceptual artist my practice has been primarily focused on environmental topics. Having grown up in the Adirondack mountains of New York, I’ve immersed myself in nature at a young age where I quickly came to the realization of the effects humans place onto the environment. My body of focus has been developed through the exploration of materials, intentional and accidental form compositions and most importantly the power of story telling. Story telling adds depth where its layers can be analyzed and understood through the passing of time. Objects can be marked by its maker or aged through natural processes as it comes to fruition through time and intent.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Empathy, work ethic and passion for your vision. I implore anyone to leave their home countries and embrace a new culture. Human connectiveness is crucial to being human. Steer hard towards your goals and discipline yourself to work advantageously only to see your visions come to light.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I invite anybody to collaborate creatively. If you are reading this then chances are you know where I stand.
