Meet Charlynn Searcy

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Charlynn Searcy a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Charlynn, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?

I really love this question because I feel that confidence and self esteem is an on going journey for most people, including myself. How I developed my confidence and self esteem was taking baby steps outside my comfort zone. It’s not easy at all, but it is worth it. With anything I do and also what I have learned in therapy, to develop confidence in yourself you have to do the things that scare and challenge you over and over again. I love to bake and I also love art and I don’t always get it right the first time, but repeating the process and learning my mistakes helps me gain confidence for my next try. I also have to remember to STAY IN MY LANE and stay focused on my path. It’s so easy to get distracted with what other bakers and creatives are doing. What do they say? Comparison is the thief of joy. It’s so true! I remind myself that it doesn’t matter what everyone else is doing….I AM ME and I have my own ideas and unique take on things.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I am self taught baker that went to school for graphic design! I just started my home baking business called The Dessert First Club last year in 2024, but I have been baking for people much longer than that. I have always been interested in baking since I was younger. I would sit in from the tv and watch baking shows and competitions all the time with my family. What I love about baking and decorating is that it is another type of art form that I get to create with. One thing that I love to incorporate in my baked goods are nostalgic flavors. Being a 90’s kid…I think we had some of the best snacks. So, I want people to experience that when they take a bite out of my treats. I specialize in small dessert like cookies, bento/lunchbox cakes, cupcakes, and decorated sugar cookies. I also create dessert boxes for many different holidays, which give me an opportunity to create new and different flavors.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

The things that were and are still impactful on my journey are, 1. Take it one step at a time, 2. Ask for help, 3. Rest, but don’t give up. No matter what journey you are on, it’s always going to be important to take it one step at a time. Overwhelming yourself with all the things you have to do or need to accomplish is not going to make you get it done faster. Take one or two things off your list and do those, then pick another two and completes those next…and so on and so forth. Asking for help is a big one! If you don’t know the answer or you are confused, just ask. There are so many people out there willing to help and even encourage you. Now, this one is a HUGE one for me and I still have to make myself do this…REST. Sometimes you get mentally and physically drained other times things just seem to just keep going wrong, so take a break. Rest, but don’t quit. When you’re rejuvenated get back up and keep going.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

The most impactful thing my mother has done for me and continues to do for me is encourage me. Her belief in me and in my gifts and talents gives me the push that I need to keep striving for my dreams. She is my number one sous chef and taste tester whenever I am testing a new recipe (lol). My mother truly makes me believe that I can do anything. I am so blessed and appreciative to have this wonderful human in my life.
