We recently connected with Jay Scott and have shared our conversation below.
Jay, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
From a young age my father instilled in. me that hard work and dedication to whatever you put your mind to, will lead to success eventually. He taught me and showed me by his actions, to work hard even when no one was looking. To work with pride in yourself and the job you do. He is really the reason I have the work ethic I do. I can’t stress it enough, instill these values in your kids when they are young.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I have been an art dealer for 24 years. I first started working for my then, mother-in-law in 1999 at her gallery, Habatat Galleries. I managed the shipping & exhibition setup dept, In 2006, I opened my own gallery in Tysons Corner, VA and ran that for 5 years. Then in 2011, I got the call that my Mother-in-law wanted to retire, so I closed my gallery in VA and moved back to FL to take over Habatat Galleries.
Since then I have modernized the gallery and built a large online following with 44K followers on Instagram, 11K on Facebook, 5K on Pinterest, 11K on TikTok and over 4K visitors a month to my website. I just recently closed my West Palm Beach, FL location and I am based in Winston Salem, NC now. I have taken the gallery completely online with an appointment only showroom. My focus in worldwide art sales online through pictures & video
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Determination
Being self employed is a roller coster. You must always keep your eyed forward, looking toward your goals, not just what is happening now. You must be able to overcome temporary setbacks.
2. Faith
I believe in God and that He is in control, even when I am not. Having that faith helps me to set aside worry & anxiety and know that He will take care of the things I can’t.
3. Integrity
Trust is a huge factor in building your client list. An honest and trustworthy reputation is key in building any successful business.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Like I said in an earlier question, I am completely focused on online art sales. I have just made the transition to a virtual gallery. I am looking to partner with people to make creative online content for my website & social media platforms, featuring the glass art I sell.
