We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tiffany Phillips. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tiffany below.
Hi Tiffany, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
Put simply, it comes from my mother. From as early as I can remember, my mother worked outside of the home. She was a teenager when she lost both of her parents about a year a part. She became a mom at the age of 16 so she had to get to work to care for my brother. I came along the following year so there was yet another mouth to feed. She didn’t marry either of our fathers so caring for us landed solely on her.
My mother always worked to provide for us. Until I became an adult, there was never a time she didnt work. I saw the struggle growing up and knew I didn’t want to experience the same struggle as an adult. My mother never graduated high school but I recognized the power of education early on. I knew if I coupled a string work ethic, with a degree the possibilities would be endless.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I have the pleasure of helping people achieve their dream of homeownership. Its special to me because I get to directly assist in lowering Minnesota’s homeownership gap which is one of the largest in the country. Doing this work is critical because I know people who own a home have a net worth that’s about 40 times greater than those who rent. This directly impacts the wealth gap so it’s my duty to share the possibility of homeownership with anyone who will listen.
Over the past 8-9 months, a good portion of my clients have been taking advantage of the State’s first generation down payment assistance program. A total of $150 million was released Spring 2024. As of March 2025, approximately $60 million remains offering each homebuyer up to $32,000 to make homeownership possible. in order to use these funds, the buyer must be a first-time buyer whose parents have never owned a home. If the parent owned but lost it to foreclosure and never purchased again, the homebuyer could use 1st generation funds.
In 2019 I joined NAREB Twin Cities to partner and connect with other professionals committed to this work. June of 2024 we kicked off a monthly series called Unlocking Homeownership: Your Guide To Down Payment Assistance. At these events we invite future homeowners to meet and connect with homeownership advisors at local nonprofits to the tools and resources available to help achieve their goal. The resources include money management, credit improvement, and down payment assistance. We travel across the metro so its available to the masses.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
For me it’s always been about wanting to be good at whatever I do. have always wanted people to see me as a smart person. It’s important for me to be a person of integrity who others can rely on.
For advice, i think it’s a matter of caring about your brand, reputation, and work product. I feel you show up positively in spaces if you care about those things,
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal client is anyone who desires to become a homeowner. I really enjoying working with those who never thought it was possible to own a home. In MN we have a great network of non profits and real estate professionals who are passionate about helping people achieve their dream of owning a home. Their closings are so rewarding for me!
