Meet Augusto Coen

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Augusto Coen. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Augusto, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I definitely get my work ethic from my parents. They instilled in me a sense of obligation and responsibility. I was never allowed to start something make a commitment, either personal or to someone else, and not complete it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I started this business at the end of 2008. I was working in finance at the time and the economy was tanking into the great recession. I began with taking orders doing door-to-door sales on the street and eventually moved into the location where we are today. 14 years later we have established the only premier Puerto Rican restaurant in Los Angeles, established officially November 2009. I plan on expanding the business and possibly franchising in an effort to bring Puerto Rican food out of the shadows and into the mainstream, available to the entire United States

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Discipline has to be the most important skill you need to develop in business. It translates into everything. Discipline will get you up when you don’t want to, it will get you through the day, and it will make you constantly look at how you can keep improving.

Patience is another key. Patience with people, patience with your goals, patience with business issues. Rushing or trying to cut corners can sometimes provide short-term success, but long-term achievements requires that you go step by step. There are many times goals of mine take 2 sometimes 3 years to complete.

Consistency is the last thing. It is very important that you create brand recognition with whatever you’re trying to do. Along with having a recognizable brand and product that product or service has to be the same every time. The hours set everyday, the inventory stocked and never out. Consistency is key to developing consumer’s trust in your brand.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
The most helpful person in my development is my wife. It is important to have someone who is in your corner, who has the wisdom to guide you when your emotions are leading you to disaster. Also to have someone with which to confide your fear and problems. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a romantic partner but having a good team around you that you go to to seek advice is very important. It will put things into perspective and keep you from making costly mistakes
