Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Syvanna Ascencio. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Syvanna, sincerely appreciate your selflessness in agreeing to discuss your mental health journey and how you overcame and persisted despite the challenges. Please share with our readers how you overcame. For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
If I am being honest, persisting and perseverance has been a challenge when it comes to my mental health especially as a business owner and a mother. My business in the very beginning actually started out as a hobby due to the fact that I was afraid of getting PPD. I have always been the type of person that has had to always be doing something or try to be productive and after much therapy sessions I learned that this was a sort of coping mechanism when it came to my mental health. If I was constantly busy then I wouldn’t have to sit and dwell in my thoughts which would then probably deepen my already existing mental health issues. My business started in 2021,
shortly after I had my daughter and was on maternal leave. Don’t get me wrong, being a mother is one of my best accomplishments yet, but in between the baby naps and trying to work through all the changes my body had just undergone ( which by the way in itself was a lot ) , I found myself with my thoughts now facing new mental health challenges which was PPD and PPA. I knew I had to keep myself busy or else I would crumble, and I knew looking at my daughter I had no other choice but to figure a way to persist with these new mental health challenges because I now had someone depending on me. I get asked all the time, how do you do it, how do you manage it all? And I always say because I have no choice. I’ve had countless nights where I’ve had to have talks with myself telling myself that I didn’t come this far to only stay here. I was blessed with the privilege of being able to be a SAHM and a business owner. I get to watch my daughter grow and never miss out on milestones while also earning an income which is a blessing because many moms don’t get that in this generation. Between then and now I realize how far I’ve come but when it comes to managing my mental health the road hasn’t always been easy. Everything I do is for my daughter , she’s given my life a purpose and I knew when I finally branded my business I had to include her which is where the name Sylee & Co . came from. Having my business has opened many doors for me and I’ve met some amazing people along the way and some of them I now consider friends. I can’t say I have the recipe for mental health challenges but what’s helped me out tremendously is being honest with myself and in my work, some therapy sessions, and most definitely having some sort of support system. Which when it comes to business, my reps have been so important to me and help me out in more ways than I can imagine. Truly I’m so blessed.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Sylee & Co. is a kids clothing boutique. We offer sublimation clothing items & accessories. Sublimation is a digital printing technique that uses heat and pressure to transfer dye from special paper onto a substrate, like fabric or certain coated materials, creating a permanent, vibrant, and fade-resistant print. In simpler words, I offer products with designs that will not fade, peel, crack, or tear with wear & use. The best part about supporting Sylee & Co. is not only are you supporting my mama run business but you are also supporting other mama run businesses as well. Many if not all of my designs are made either by myself or from other moms who hand draw the designs I offer. It’s the support that keeps on supporting and what’s better than that!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The 3 most important qualities, skills and or areas of knowledge that were most impactful on my journey has been Integrity, patience , and communication. For those who are early on in their journey I think these 3 parts are so important not only in your business journey but also your personal journey. In regards to being a business owner, you have to be true to who you are and have integrity within your work because if you don’t then it will show in the products you create. If you are wanting to start a business or even just become a better you, you have to understand that things take time and if you don’t walk into something with the mindset of having patience or gaining that then the road to achieving your goals will be more difficult than anticipated. Never say never is the best advice I could give . Above all , always communicate. Whether that be with yourself , a customer etc always communicate. In business, we have to understand that customers aren’t just customers these are real people
Who have real feelings and want to be heard and listened too. Kindness is always free and the world needs people who are kind and who know how to communicate. Always be opening minded because you could very well be the roadblock between your next accomplishment or opportunity.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When I am feeling overwhelmed the best thing I can do is get my mind into a state of comfort so I can decompress and go back into the situation I was dealing with but jump back into it with a more clear head. For me that may look like eating my favorite comfort meal and watching my favorite comfort show, going to play volleyball to release any built up feelings, or even taking a moment to pray and journal. We can be our worst critics so it’s always important to know how to decompress from tough situations appropriately.
