We were lucky to catch up with Thomas Krause recently and have shared our conversation below.
Thomas, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
I keep my creativity alive from the responses I get from my customers. My scuba diving and fishing experiences have endless paintings, I want to convey what I’ve seen to people, and bring the underwater world out in my paintings, for people that never get to see what I have.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My passion for painting came from a young age, always doing something crafty, fixing old things to look new, and paying attention to details. I always love being outside exploring, fishing and learning about nature on my own. All through grade school and high school , I did as much painting, sculpting as I could, making sea creatures my main focus.
I had a love for the water, and started fishing every moment I had free. I was just fascinated at all the creatures and different kinds of fish I could catch. When I was old enough to get scuba certified, I did at the age of 15. Now I could really see what was under the water! From this point on, my painting and knowing what was underneath water, merged, I just wanted to show everyone on canvas. This was the most exciting thing for me.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
* I think the knowledge of “subject matter” for my paintings is very important……Species of fish, sea creatures, and animals.
* Paying attention to details
*Painting classes to develop your own style people can recognize.
My advise would be to, learn as much as you can about your passion before diving in, but you must stick with it through the bad times. It will pay off in the long run.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
My high school teacher, sculptor, artist! Bernard R Rosenberg. He saw the talent and passion I had, and encouraged me to stick with it. He was my teacher, my mentor, fishing friend, and became part of my family. Without him , I don’t think I would be as successful , and knowledgeable.
