We recently connected with TASHA MCKENZIE and have shared our conversation below.
TASHA, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
My past experiences. I have been through challenging experiences, hardships, and made it through. My faith and my children being me motivation. My mind set. I tend to push forward even during setbacks. My support system from my family, and my village. I am rooted in purpose and values. Overall day to day operations and surprises give me resilience.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am the owner and founder of a home health care agency since September 2009 based in Pittsburgh Pa. I started this agency, and I have helped the community with supports for daily living to maintain their independence; along with creating employment opportunities for individuals. I recently expanded in 2024 to operate in Ohio.
I am also the founder of two nonprofit organizations. Divine Women Empowerment: We uplift, support and inspire women in all areas of life. to empower each other while creating opportunities for healing and growth.
I recently started another nonprofit that will support parents of children with disabilities and health challenges. This organization will offer support, and resources to assist in the aspects of caring for children with needs of assistance and guidance.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
My skills came from taking care of my grandfather when I was younger. Over time I have always had the passion of helping others and making a difference in people’s lives. I gained hands on experience, and even more once I became a mother. Over the years, overall actual experiences are what helped me improve and developed. You learn what to do and what not to do.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
I pause and breathe. I pray, and journal. I then prioritize. Depending on the situation(s) I prioritize how I will execute, and or handle things. I only handle things that I can control. I am learning to say “no” and I am learning to deal with people and things during “office hours” aka my capacity. Accepting and adapting to the situation and environment. Be solution based upon what you can control/handle.
one thing at a time!
