We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lorri Lofton. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lorri below.
Lorri , thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
Being the only one in the room can at first seem intimidating. We often gravitate to what’s familiar, but how does that work when you don’t see familiar? This starts from within. I have learned to do the work of ridding myself of any doubt, insecurities, or negative thinking. If you’re in that room, someone saw fit for you to be. No matter if you’re in the room to be a spectator, speaker, or just to network – do it with intention. This may involve doing some research prior to or even stepping outside of your comfort zone. Either way, moving with intention will always produce success.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I call myself an event and content curator. I am based in Charlotte, NC. In 2018, I founded and launched Charlotte Brunch Festival. This event is the first of its kind in North Carolina. It focuses on showcasing brunch items from local culinary artists and beyond accompanied by live entertainment and brunch inspired beverages. This event has grown in size and cadence. It is now held twice a year averaging 3000+ attendees. Our next event is happening Saturday, May 17, 2025 at The Boardwalk at the Shoppes at University City in Charlotte, NC.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I was recently laid off from my corporate job of 15 years. I am thankful for the skills I was able to learn and sharpen while there. While it can be frustrating to work a 9-5 while working on your 5-9, use this time to invest. Invest in your business with the income from your day job. This could look like continuing your education, upgrading your tools, paying for marketing assistance or hiring help. Next, if you’re just starting out, seek a mentor in the field or industry you’re looking to go into. Ask if you can shadow, assist, volunteer, etc. A great way to learn is from others and often, mentors will give advice on things that DID NOT work for them so you can avoid. Last but not least, don’t be afraid to network. Knowing the right people can get you in rooms, get you that yes, and truly make a difference for your journey. However, don’t be a mooch. Be sure to bring something to the table so it’s a beneficial exchange.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed, I unplug. Much like a device that works better when you unplug it for a few seconds, this works for humans as well. Unplugging for me looks like scroll free mornings, post and get off moments, or going a day or more without social media. This works well for me as it allows me to rest my mind, focus on something else or even focus on myself.
