Meet Emily Sanchez

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Emily Sanchez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Emily, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.

My life purpose came the first day of an Intro to Entrepreneurship elective course at Fresno State. I went into the college straight outta high school thinking I was going to major in Psychology. I still had doubts, so I saw the elective and thought “Why not, it wont hurt its just credits I need.” Cut to day 1 and I was hooked and zoned in. Once the first semester was over I changed my major! I was all in!

Once I was half way through College I started questioning what industry I saw myself in. I had done Folklorico for over 7 years at this point but the drive wasn’t there anymore but the creativity was. The makeup and the costumes always gave me a spark. So I thought makeup; I found a local makeup school at the time, The Makeup Imaginarium, and signed up for the Summer course. That became a wild ride for my last three years at state. I was lucky enough to work with many amazing photographers, fashion shows, editorial teams and even have a few publications. I got into retail of the makeup world and discovered skincare. Also, at the time I was finalizing my last few semesters and it was truly time to decide my direction; I thought management at a beauty counter and was actually training in that direction. One day that changed, my childhood friend was studying at Milan and needed faces to wax. I mean hey why not it’s $5 and I love her. The school was definitely not University status by any means but the idea of building a brand as an esthetician with all three passions in my life sounded and felt like the right path.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

Now at 6 years licensed I have been solo since February 2021. My first year I was employed at a local Day Spa all within COVID beginning. Some may have found the time uneasy and questionable but I’m blessed for me it gave me a voice. Where I was just wasn’t the best for me mentally, don’t get me wrong I learned so much compared to what I would had if I started solo from day 1. Just some times we find ourselves ina negative environment. I took the days, weeks even months that we had to quarantine to look at all my options when everything would go back to the new normal. My childhood friend called me one day and it was just a sign! She was stressing and contemplating closing her solo business because of uncertainty to afford rent. I got off the phone and called my boyfriend and laid everything out and he just embraced the financial hardship and told me “DO IT”. I cut my ties from the day spa and went in to sublease.

I have since moved into my own suite and will be celebrating a year on May 1st!!
My clientele was needing a change to grow and open my availability to do so. Also, this has opened so many new doors and pathways. I am now in the process of expanding retail to hopefully in the near future create a boutique on one of half the suite and on a partial section a makeup station. I feel in such a niche industry you can still have burnout and to help that I am creating multiple avenues of income/creativity.
A big step out of the creative world is the idea to create products. It is in my mind and I have found an amazing Organic brand that would create it. This brand can’t stay on my shelves, local to California and makes everything in small batches. It is truly a match made in heaven and the time has come to just take another leap!

I’m not in this for the money or to be this crazy big name, I just want to create a safe space where someone can come and leave with 10x more confidence.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

HMMMMMM……….

Number 1 BUSINESS DEGREE. I have and will always hear about how I could have just skipped college and went straight to beauty school. Which is true but looking back I was not mature enough to do that. College was way more than a degree for me, it was a place I matured and became an adult.

Number 2 LISTENING. I am all for astrology and will always believe in it. I am a true Taurus and we love to listen! As an esthetician you better know how because you need to truly hear your clients skincare history and what they are doing at home. You can’t just tell them to get on the treatment bed and just put anything on them that is just asking for a reaction.

Number 3 OVERTHINKING. This might be a flaw to some but when I start overthinking something I know it wont be done until it is perfect.

I tell anyone in the industry who will listen to keep up to date with Stateboard regulations, they don’t send out information it just pops up online. Also, learn and do everything you can on your own as the owner. I believe the more control you have, especially financially, the farther you will go.

How would you describe your ideal client?

Easy! Someone who comes into their first facial with an open heart. It is so common to get someone who has had a negative experience and it’s my passion to change that. I want them to feel confident enough to understand their personal game plan to give them the results they dream of. Their game plan always includes a breakdown of their skincare routine they already have and what needs to change to their next facial selections up to 4 months.
