Meet Paige Waymer

We were lucky to catch up with Paige Waymer recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Paige, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?

I have a lot of siblings and it’s always been a goal for each one of us to keep pushing and get out of city we were in because we knew there were bigger and better opportunities other places it was just the getting out part that was going to be the obstacle.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I’m a medical research scientist that’s specializes in histology as a profession, but outside of that I’m a community organizer and candidate for city council in my city of Orangeburg, SC. I’ve served on our city’s Zoning and Planning Committee to help our city grow and get businesses and activities here for the community especially since we’re kind of rural but a retirement city for some. We do however house 2 HBCUs within the city limits but 4 all together in the county of Orangeburg. I’m really just trying to take my city into another frontier and have us present in some of the things going on but also educate the public on how we can maximize the land and city that we have to work for us.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I have great people skills and honestly I was born with it. I’ve never not met a person I don’t know because I just talk to people no matter what. Working in healthcare and when I was younger food service, I was always called to handle disgruntled or tense situations because I was good with understanding and helping.
I’m nurturing because a lot of times people just wanna be heard and seen so I do that and try to talk them up.
And I’m a visual learner so you can’t show me something and I not get it because I’m quick with catching on.
The best advice I have to another is just be intentional and genuine because your purpose will shine through.

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?

The obstacle to overcome has been myself and not because I don’t do what I set out to do but because sometimes I’m like everyone else and I let my fears or my fear of failure to launch creep into my head. Once I put my mind to something 95% of the time I knock it out the park.
