We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tia Myers. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tia below.
Hi Tia, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
From the time I was a child, I’ve always felt like the odd one out. I was used to being the youngest in the room, the quiet one, the one that likes weird stuff, the only person with my skin tone. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve found that these can be strengths instead of letting them feel like unfortunate things I couldn’t change. Being the youngest allowed me the chance to gain wisdom from people who came before me. Being quiet allows me to listen and watch because if you’re the loudest in the room, you probably aren’t learning as much as you could be. Liking “weird” things has allowed me to create my own identity and not find my worth in other’s opinions of me. Being the only one who looks like me has allowed me to bring perspective others might not have. All of these things are parts of me that have made me who I am and will continue to push me further in my life and career.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am currently in school getting my Bachelor’s degree in Business and I have a passion for blending creativity and entrepreneurship in the fashion industry. I have had experience in luxury beauty and fragrance sales working with global brands like Lancôme, a high end French skincare and makeup line and IPLB which represents fragrance houses like Coach, Jimmy Choo, Montblanc, and Kate Spade. These jobs have helped me refine my ability to build meaningful relationships with clients and meet my goals. As of now I am currently building my online presence so that I can better build my brand and connect with others like me.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
First and foremost has to be my faith. Although I grew up in church I never had a strong relationship with God, but I knew I had faith that He would get me through anything. Thinking on it now, I had to have faith, because there was a time when that was literally all I had. I have grown so much in my faith today that I can pray about anything good or bad, surrender it to God and have peace about the outcome.
Next would probably be patience. Now I can’t say I am patient all the time, however, I can say practicing it and learning to be productive in my waiting has been major thing for me. We often don’t realize there is a difference between just hoping for something and learning to wait well. Waiting well means doing everything within my control to bring the best outcome and giving the rest to God.
Last would be my creativity. It has always been an outlet for me to express whatever I’m feeling. That could be through music, sewing, drawing, dancing, painting etc. Art has been a kind of therapy for me and without it I don’t know where or who I would be. It’s definitely the one characteristic I’ve always had that no one taught me. It has always just been inside of me.
For anyone who wants to grow in any of these areas, my advice would be to learn being okay with being uncomfortable. Some of the biggest breakthroughs I’ve had in these areas has come from getting out of my comfort zone or getting rid of a way of thinking that was limiting me from my potential.
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
It would have to be reminding myself that I am worthy and qualified for my calling. Recently I’ve started to build my social media and although it’s been pretty positive, I’ve had to get out of my comfort zone quite a lot. It’s interesting because I have always recognized that I am someone who has always been interested in a variety of things and I felt like an outcast because of that. Now I am learning that it is a daily practice to be rid of thoughts of self doubt or unworthiness. I can’t allow myself to sit in the “what ifs” of everything I do. Instead I am learning to push past negative thoughts and do the hard thing anyway. Sometimes it is as simple as just doing the hard thing.
Mental blocks can feel like physical chains holding you, but once you come to terms with the fact that you have control and life is not just happening to you, it makes it all a little easier. It’s also important to remember that the path you’re on is not supposed to be like anyone else’s, comparison is the thief of joy. The only competition you need to be concerned with is the one with yourself.
