Meet Rebekah E.

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Rebekah E.. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Rebekah below.

Rebekah, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?

My creativity is kept alive by my love for my interests, friends, and the world around me. As someone who becomes very invested in media I like, I find a lot of inspiration in the worlds that others create. Playing around with characters and storylines often helps me learn what I enjoy in characters and world building, which leads me to forge my own path in art and storytelling. I also take inspiration from editing and music. My friends are very creative people, so discussing and sharing art and stories with them is a lot of fun! They are willing to critique and guide me and I help them in turn. The world around us is so full of inspiration everywhere- a song on the radio, someone’s cool outfit, the natural world, the internet. I find inspiration in the strangest places. As an audio editor, I keep an ear out for unique sounds either to remember for foley later or to figure out how I could replicate it. As a visual artist, I find myself observing the way people look and dress, potentially for character design later. Creativity is a fickle thing at times, but I have found the easiest way to rediscover it is to let myself relax and look around.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I am an artist, creating primarily digital art using Procreate. I am currently in school studying Library Science and Cinema, Television, and Media- primarily focusing on audio and video editing. I sell my art on my shop, Woodland Dreams, and I plan to look for editing positions when I graduate. I am currently beginning my Capstone Project on educational resources and videos on cryptids!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I am early on my journey, but I think that the most impactful quality of my journeys with art and editing is focusing on enjoyment of what I am doing. I have fallen into making art for others, and it leaves me feeling like art is a chore. Now, I have the luxury of not doing art as my full career, so this advice may not be applicable for professional artists, but I do think that it is important no matter what you do to look for positions or jobs you’ll enjoy. Curiosity is another important quality- especially in spite of fear of failure. Letting my creativity take the wheel and experimenting with techniques that are new has led to a lot of interesting breakthroughs with both my art and editing. My last quality is a desire to learn. While I am not in art school, I still take any opportunity I can to learn new things and ways to draw better. I have taken many classes in editing, and watched movies for class that left me with more knowledge on what makes a good (or bad) edit. Sometimes just by observing something you can learn a lot!

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

I love collaborating with people creatively- I have been involved with quite a few fanzines, and I always find myself leaving with new friends and learning more about the original media and my own art! In the future, I would love to find collaborators that I could edit with or for- specifically in the podcast space. I enjoy podcasts such as The Magnus Archives and The Adventure Zone, and I think it would be a fun and interesting challenge to edit a narrative podcast. If someone out there had a podcast idea and actors but no editor, I would be more than willing to hear them out on their story!
