Meet Ashley Johnson

We recently connected with Ashley Johnson and have shared our conversation below.

Ashley, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?

I’ve learned to own my voice, allow my work to speak louder than any doubt I may have about being in a room. I stay rooted in my purpose, and always carry myself in a way that will make people want to work with me. Being the only one just means I get to pave the way for someone else that looks like me.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I’ve been a hairstylist for 10 years, and from day one, I knew this was my calling. Hair has always been more than beauty to me. It’s about identity, care, and confidence. My gift is making the outside as radiant as the soul within. I specialize in curating custom experiences for every client, something I call Crown Work, because it’s deeper than styling, it’s honoring who you are.I am so passionate about empowering women and making them feel beautiful in their skin.

Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to hair assist at my first Met Gala, which was a huge full-circle moment. While being behind the chair is still my first love, I’ve started branching out into more creative projects that allow me to express my artistry on a bigger scale. Whether it’s editorial work, collaborations, or expanding my brand, I’m focused on creating space for Black beauty and elevating the standard while staying rooted in authenticity.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

First, just being real. Be your authentic self even if that means being completely different. I’ve learned that the way you carry yourself, the energy you bring, it all matters. People remember how you made them feel, and sometimes that impression is what gets you into rooms you never imagined you’d be in.

I also had to realize early that I’m the one in control of my path. Nobody’s going to hand you your dream—you’ve got to create it, step by step. That means saying yes to yourself even when others don’t see the vision yet. I have been told no so many times. It has never stopped me.

I never stop learning. Trends come and go, but staying curious and open to growth keeps you evolving. You’re never too experienced to learn from someone else. Every client, every project, teaches me something new.

For anyone just starting out, I’d say trust yourself, don’t rush your journey, and stay locked in on your purpose. Your vibe, your voice, your story…that’s what makes you one of a kind.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

The most impactful thing my parents did for me was make me feel truly seen and heard. They never tried to box me in. They let me be creative, and more importantly, they supported it. I used to cut and dye my dolls’ hair until they started buying me mannequins and shears. That simple support planted the seeds for the career I have now.

They also taught me the value of hard work. Watching them handle their responsibilities with consistency and pride showed me what it means to show up for your goals. And something I carry with me to this day is their reminder to stay balanced—yes, I love my career, but they helped me understand that life is also about family, joy, rest, and experiences outside of work. That perspective keeps me grounded.
