We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Miles Frizzell. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Miles below.
Miles, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I’ve always grown up around musicians and songwriters. When I was 12, I picked up the guitar and decided to learn Left Handed! Everyone around me had told me “You’ll never be able to play left handed.” or “Why would you learn how to play the (wrong) way?”. My passion for guitar and my love for The Beatles (Specifically Paul) fueled this idea of me learning how to play the opposite way on guitar.
Between people telling me I couldn’t do it as well as the challenges that come with dropping a skill set and relearning it entirely, there were times when quitting would have felt easier: Yet I have always felt/feel accomplished to know that i’m doing something that I love and having a great time doing it!
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Hello! My name is Miles Frizzell! I am 21 years old, and a musician from Nashville, TN. I tour around the world as Paul McCartney in the top tribute bands in the United States – (Emmy award winning band) The Fab Four, 1964, Forever Abbey Road, and Classical Mystery Tour – just to name a few. Our aim for these shows is to bring the experience and music of The Beatles to generations who haven’t experienced or want to relive The Beatles’ touring years. Usually we cover the bands hits from 1963-1970 but it varies with each band. For example “1964 The Tribute” covers only the touring years of The Beatles and we portray “John, Paul, George, and Ringo”, it’s a show designed to look like The Beatles touring live! Where as with my local band “Forever Abbey Road” we have more creative freedom to vibe out on the songs and make them our own!
I never knew you could make a career from playing one man or the music of The Beatles but I would be lying if I said it wasn’t a dream come true. It’s a very niche community, but also a large one. One of my favorite things that has come out of all of this is connecting with fans and meeting new people!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I believe the most important skills that I have cultivated for my career have been – networking and social skills, time management, and having trust in myself.
Networking and social skills are one of the most fundamental tools to have in the entertainment industry. Most, if not all of the opportunities that i’ve had have happened through some form of networking. Networking also builds social skills which is important for being a team player and communicating with others. Being kind and level headed but also having clear boundaries and expectations is a good foundation for getting where you want and what you need!
Time management can be tricky but it’s great practice for discipline and consistency. Schedules can get pretty hectic and if you manage yourself or have flights to catch, things can add up quickly. So it’s always great to be organized and to manage your time well so you can make the most out of each day!
And finally, the biggest for me.. trusting yourself! There have been many times where I feel like i’m not ready for something or said to myself “I can’t do it.” but the hardest part is trusting yourself to take that leap! Trust yourself in knowing that whatever you put your mind to, you can do. It doesn’t happen overnight, but when you’re ready, you will know!
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and anxious sometimes, in fact it’s normal! I always like to take a step back, take a deep breath, and switch my focus to something I love. Music is also a great outlet for me! Find an art that you feel most inclined to express and explore and let it take your stress and worries away!
