We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Matthew Romasanta. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Matthew below.
Matthew , so great to have you with us today. There are so many topics we want to ask you about, but perhaps the one we can start with is burnout. How have you overcome or avoided burnout?
Rest and self care is always important if you want to avoid burning out. For me, remembering that it my physical and mental health needs to be maintained in order to stay creative and productive. I like to go on bike rides, hitting a heavy bag or punching bag and walking in a park. Meditation, journaling, and good old fashioned sleep help me avoid burning out.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am currently employed full time as a bus operator for San Diego MTS but before that I was a freelance photographer. Ever since being employed, I have been more focused on creating personal work rather than focusing on making images for clients. My girlfriend and I are both visual artists and we like to produce original short films and photograph stills. I am currently working on a series centered around Catholicism. I was raised catholic and have had an odd relationship with spirituality, faith and religion. I explore these topics through the artwork I create. I am working on making still images, short films, and even products and merchandise. If the client and job is aligned with my aesthetic and artistic brand, I am open to taking on clients.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The most important qualities, skills and or areas of knowledge that were impactful in my journey would be curiosity and experimentation with light and photography. I would say it is important to stay curious and continue to experiment. Let go of perfectionism and just continuous.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I am feeling overwhelmed, I focus on taking slow deep breaths and taking a walk or bike ride outside. I find being outside really centers and grounds me. It helps me focus on what is important and what is in front of me.
