Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Santedubois. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Santedubois, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
There’s only a few Mexican/Latino DJs I can think of off the top of my head in dance music (EDM): me, the homie Rommii, Deorro, Gordo/Carnage, Dabow, and Boombox Cartel. Standing in these rooms at clubs, festivals, networking events etc. especially from an artist/DJ/performer standpoint- I feel like 99% of the time I’m the only Latino in the room. There’s a sort of humbling but also empowering and inspiring energy that you have to carry with you to keep going and push past the narrative that Mexicans or Latinos are just the help or work for the company or venue- I try to inspire everyone around me- everyone watching me- to pursue their dreams and really get after it. That’s how I have taught myself to be effective and reached this point in my successful career. I am doing it for the people who don’t see themselves represented on the lineups but will get there eventually. The best way to stand out is to be authentic and original.. definitely don’t see anyone in EDM in 2025 that sounds or looks like me.. so I keep pushin. Orale.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m an independent artist and underground legend. I’m a Mexican-Argentinian DJ from Los Angeles blending Trap/Bass/Club, and Speed House for my signature sound: Space Bass. I’ve coined my original music as ‘Space Bass’ because of it’s spacey, dreamy, and catchy aesthetic- and have built that into my branded clothing, logos, and overall story. I grew up in Boyle Heights, Pasadena, Hollywood, and also lived in Chicago. I’m known throughout the underground & dance music world for my eclectic and high energy DJ sets; my music is heavily inspired by TroyBoi, RL Grime, Joe Kay (Soulection), Kaytranada, and many other dance music & hip-hop pioneers. My live DJ sets and original tracks are a must-experience. Def Check out ‘Feelz’ & ‘Soul’. Most recently; I released a project in February 2025 called ‘Emotional Dance Music’. I have a ton of singles on the way, which you can preview on my latest Instagram post and I also have a project on the way that is inspired by the Ryan Gosling indie film ‘Drive’, the original ‘Fast & Furious’, and underground LA culture where night time driving meets street culture- it’s a speed house project. here’s my Linktree: https://linktr.ee/santedubois
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
advice to people starting out who want to do it long term: 1. consistency with creating original music and learning music theory and balancing discovering new music, 2. networking and maintaining relationships and learning about the ways the music business flows, 3. using social media and being consistent with marketing, and bonus: 4. keeping yourself inspired and balancing mental health and making sure you’re happy doing what you’re doing.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Before I die I need to collab with Tinashe, Rico Nasty, Vince Staples, Bino Rideaux, Lil Tecca, and then Skrillex, TroyBoi, RL Grime, and Joe Kay. I could go all day with this subject but those are the artists I can think of right now 🙂
