Meet Yesica Coria Zavaleta

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Yesica Coria Zavaleta. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Yesica , we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.

I came to the USA about 19 years ago. I tried many jobs, so many new ways to fit into this new culture. I didn’t understand why I felt so empty. I thought coming here and making some money would make me feel successful, but it didn’t work. I began to feel empty, but my artistic spirit never shut down. Back in my hometown, I learned a skill that connected me with my roots, and I began to heal my empty heart that missed my culture so much. I started creating crafts made of cornhusks and promoting them through videos and craft events.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I’m a graphic designer. I studied art many years ago. When I first got here, I worked as a freelancer, and eventually, I brought back a skill I learned at a book fair in my hometown. The art of working with cornhusk. This is an ancient craft that is not only well known in my culture but also practiced in many countries around the world. In some places, cornhusk is used to create functional art such as purses, furniture, sandals, and more. In others, it’s used to make baskets, hats, and decorative items like wall décor, dolls, and flowers.

When I first tried to find information online, there was very little available. So, I decided to create a YouTube channel, which now has over 23,000 followers. On this channel, I’ve been promoting how to create cornhusk crafts, which I believe is very important to preserve the culture for new generations. Most recently, I’ve added another passion that also fulfills my spirit: painting and other crafts, which I share through YouTube Shorts.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

I believe one of the most significant changes in my life that led me to create this type of art was my deep longing for my culture. Looking back, I never thought that taking a class would change my artistic path. I think the ability to adapt, listen to your inner voice, and stay creative (even when you don’t see immediate results) are the most important qualities an artist should have. Nothing in life is easy, but if you do something you love, your path in this life will be less difficult.

Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?

I would definitely continue creating. I also love teaching, so I would form a group of people and teach them what I have learned so far. Hopefully, this would help keep our traditions alive for a bit longer.
