We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Joanne Tang a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Joanne, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I get my resilience from having a good support network. Building strong, healthy relationships with loved ones and friends give me needed support and help guide me in good and bad times.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Nails by Yen is a full-service beauty salon dedicated to consistently providing high customer satisfaction by rendering excellent service, quality products, and furnishing an enjoyable atmosphere. We also maintain a friendly, fair, and creative work environment, which respects diversity, ideas, and hard work. We provide all kind of nail services, facial, wax, massage, mobile services including large parties. I’m proud that my business is well-established for over 20 years. Most of our customers have been with us for many years and we’re thankful that they’ve recommenced our business to others. Word of mouth is the best advertising so we really appreciate everyone who have supported us in the past and still do so now.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Exceptional Client Relationship Management: Building and nurturing strong relationships with clients was paramount. This went beyond just providing a service; it involved understanding their needs, making them feel valued, and fostering loyalty.
Technical Proficiency and Artistic Vision: While the business side is crucial, the core of a salon is the quality of its services. Staying up-to-date with trends, mastering techniques, and having an artistic eye for nails were essential.
Business Acumen and Operational Efficiency: Understanding the financial aspects, managing inventory, scheduling effectively, and marketing the salon were critical for sustainability and growth.
Advice for early journey: Focus on developing your interpersonal skills. Practice active listening, empathy, and clear communication. Remember clients are individuals with their own preferences and expectations. Personalize their experience and make them feel seen and heard. Even small gestures of care can build lasting connections. Never stop learning and honing your craft. Invest in education, practice regularly, and seek inspiration from various sources. Develop your own unique style while also being adaptable to client requests. Your technical skills and artistic flair are what will initially attract and ultimately retain clients. Even if your passion is the creative side, dedicate time to learning the basics of business. Understand budgeting, pricing, and basic marketing principles. Look for ways to streamline your operations to maximize efficiency and profitability. Don’t be afraid to ask for advice from other business owners or mentors.
If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
I would prioritize spending quality time with loved ones – family and close friends. I’d want to strengthen those bonds, create lasting memories, and ensure they know how much they mean to me. This would involve more intentional conversations, shared experiences, and simply being present with them.
I would seek ways to contribute positively to the world, even in my remaining time. This could involve sharing knowledge, supporting causes I believe in, or using my abilities to create something of lasting value. The focus would be on leaving a positive impact, however small.
Essentially, I would strive to live with greater intention, focusing on love, learning, and leaving a positive mark.
