We were lucky to catch up with Kajal Zaveri recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kajal, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?
My optimism is deeply rooted in nature. No matter what is happening in my life or generally in the the world, the natural world continues to offer moments of beauty, renewal, and quiet wisdom. A sunrise after a storm, the changing colors of the seasons, beautiful wildfower blooms springing up through the hard concrete, the calm and depth of the ocean, are such important reminders that nothing stays the same, and that each day carries the possibility of a fresh start. That sense of resilience in nature is a great life lesson for my personal life and inspires my art deeply.
I also draw optimism from the creative process itself. Painting is a space where I can let go, reconnect, and transform emotion into something uplifting. It reminds me that even chaos can lead to clarity, and that beauty can come from spontaneity, imperfection, and intuition.
Lastly, I find optimism in people and in the way viewers respond to my work, in shared moments of connection, and in my experiences teaching and mentoring young artists. Creativity brings people together. It reminds us that we’re not alone, that we’re all trying to make sense of the world in our own way. That quiet understanding gives me hope.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a New York–based artist working primarily in a loose, semi-abstract style, with nature as my biggest source of inspiration. My paintings explore the emotional landscapes we carry within us—through the lens of trees, skies, oceans, and light. I’m less interested in replicating nature exactly and more drawn to capturing how it feels—the stillness of dawn, the movement of a breeze, or the sense of renewal after rain. I want my work to act as visual pauses in busy lives—a way for people to reconnect with calm, beauty, and something greater than themselves.
What excites me most is how art can transform a space and create a sense of emotional grounding. Whether someone sees my work in their home, in a gallery, or at a fair, I hope they experience a moment of reflection, joy, or peace.
Recently, I’ve been exhibiting more art fairs around the country—from New York to Miami and San Francisco—and it makes me so happy to be able to connect with people directly and share my point of view about my work. I also find a lot of joy and meaning , as I continue to mentor young artists and work with nonprofits that bring art to diverse communities, something that’s deeply meaningful to me.
Above all, I want people to know that my art is made from a place of honesty, optimism, and deep respect for nature. It’s a quiet invitation to slow down, feel, and rediscover beauty in both the world around us—and within.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
If I had to sum up some qualities that have been helpful in my journey, then I think of persistence , intuition and authenticity.
Persistence has been key factor in moving on and making progress; art is not a linear path. There are quiet seasons, rejections, and plenty of self-doubt. But continuing to show up, to create through it all, is what makes the difference. For artists trying to make their voices heard and moving ahead, I’d say that you need to trust the process. Keep going even when it feels uncertain. Consistency matters more than perfection.
Intuition has also guided me deeply. I’m mostly self-taught, and that’s forced me to really listen to my own creative voice. Also, be authentic and don’t be afraid to paint what feels true to you, even if it doesn’t fit a trend. Your uniqueness is your strength. Do what makes you happy, is authentic to you and you will find your people who will resonate with your point of view. Most of all, believe that your perspective has value. Let your voice lead your work. Be curious, stay honest, and never stop learning. The path isn’t always clear, but it’s full of meaning—and completely worth it.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
I feel so humbled and grateful when someone connects emotionally with my work and appreciates the energy, mood, color, and the story behind each piece. It is an honor to have people buy my art for their beautiful spaces and am always grateful for their patronage. Such collectors are drawn to my expressive, happy, textured, nature inspired art and appreciate the balance of abstraction and realism. It is always special when they view it as a reflection of their own experiences, memories, or aspirations.
