Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brian John Skillen. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Brian John, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I was a world-famous dancer, traveling 6-9 months out of the year, teaching and performing—every week was a new country or city. I had achieved my childhood dream, but I felt “Is this all there is?” I thought dance was my purpose in life, but what I realized after this experience was that my true purpose in life was to help and inspire people and dance was a tool that I used to achieve this. I loved teaching dance because I was changing lives through it, and I loved performing because I was inspiring others. I developed a saying after this that is “Tools wear out, but a purpose never does.” Often times people confuse tools with purpose.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
COVID shut down my dance business, but while touring around the world, I had walked the Camino de Santiago in Spain and was inspired to write a novel. I got rejected by 50 agents, so I decided to take matters into my own hands and ran a Kickstarter Book Launch and raised over $10,000 in presales for my book in 30 days before it was available on Amazon or any other retail site. After the book was published, it became an Amazon bestseller in several categories and also went on to become an award-winning novel. After that, others started asking us to help them to publish their books and from that we formed Publishing Hackers. We have had authors in our community become Amazon Bestsellers and crack the top 100 books on the Barnes and Noble online store.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Understanding my purpose, Sales, and commitment. Listen to the small voice inside of you to discover your purpose. Understand that sales is service. Commit to making it happen.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
My parents told me I could do anything, and I believed them.
