We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Marcel Buechi a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Marcel, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
A strong work ethic is built on persistence and commitment. It’s not about short bursts of effort; it’s about showing up consistently, even when things get tough. Part of having a good work ethic is setting goals that challenge you, but are still realistic and achievable. Goals that stretch you push growth, but if they’re too far out of reach, they can quickly become discouraging.
Another key part of a strong work ethic is adopting a “just figure it out” mentality. Challenges and obstacles are inevitable, but making excuses doesn’t move you forward. When you face a problem, commit to finding a way through it. Being resourceful, taking initiative, and refusing to quit are the real signs of someone with a strong, reliable work ethic.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
For nearly three decades, I’ve been building technology solutions and companies, driven by a passion for innovation and entrepreneurship. But nothing I’ve created matches the scale and global reach of Anytime Mailbox and Anytime Postage. What makes this journey especially rewarding is that both companies were entirely self-funded—built from the ground up without outside investors.
In 2013, I co-founded Anytime Mailbox with my business partner, Matt Going. We set out with a simple but powerful mission: to digitize postal mail and license our technology to coworking spaces and mailbox operators worldwide. At its core, Anytime Mailbox is a technology and marketing company enabling the modern virtual mailbox.
A virtual mailbox is a digital service that provides individuals or businesses with a real street address where mail and packages can be received, scanned, and managed online. Instead of having physical access to a traditional mailbox, users log into a secure online platform to view scanned images of incoming envelopes and packages. From there, they can request mail to be opened and scanned, forwarded to another address, shredded, or archived.
This service is especially useful for frequent travelers, digital nomads, expats, and remote businesses who need a stable mailing address regardless of their physical location. Virtual mailboxes often include features such as check depositing, package consolidation, and email notifications for new items.
Unlike P.O. boxes, virtual mailboxes are tied to real street addresses, allowing them to receive mail from all carriers, including UPS and FedEx. They also help protect privacy and streamline mail management, eliminating the need for frequent visits to a physical location.
What started with just Matt and me has grown into a company with nearly 200 full-time employees across five countries. Today, Anytime Mailbox offers service at over 2,500 locations in over 50 countries. Hundreds of thousands of customers have signed for Anytime Mailbox. As an expat, I use the service myself here in Singapore.
Following that success, we launched Anytime Postage: a turnkey, self-service shipping kiosk that simplifies parcel shipping without requiring users to have a carrier account. The kiosk integrates a scale, label printer, and touchscreen interface. With a few taps, anyone can weigh a package, generate a label, and send it on its way. These kiosks are now installed in business centers, coworking spaces, and hotel lobbies. Fully certified in the U.S., Canada, and Europe—and available in multiple languages—Anytime Postage is proudly anchored by IWG, the world’s largest coworking operator.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
First and foremost, you must believe in your business and your idea. You need to have a clear vision of where you want to go. That vision won’t be fully formed on day one—it will evolve over time—but you must keep your eye on it. Think of it as your North Star. Visualize where you want the company to be a few years down the road, and revisit that vision often. It’s what will guide you through the uncertainty and keep you grounded.
Second, be prepared to pivot. Success in business is rarely a straight path. Pay close attention to market shifts and emerging customer needs, and be willing to adapt. Early in our journey with Anytime Mailbox, we realized the product had to be turnkey—complete with integrated billing and marketing tools. This was a shift from my previous SaaS ventures, but it was critical to the growth and scalability we’ve achieved today.
Lastly, if you can, avoid outside investors. Self-funding gives you full ownership and lets you build real wealth in your business. Instead of spending time pitching to VCs, you can focus on building features, improving marketing, and hiring great people. Start lean, gain traction, and reinvest in your company—it’s one of the most powerful ways to grow.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
As our company transitioned from startup to scaleup, we underwent a significant organizational shift. Just a year ago, our executive committee consisted of four people. Today, it has doubled to eight, with the addition of senior-level executives who bring the expertise needed to guide us through our next phase of growth. One of the most pivotal moves was hiring an experienced CEO to lead us into the future.
Entrepreneurs often believe they can continue steering a rapidly growing organization on their own—but in reality, that’s rarely sustainable. My business partner and I remain actively involved in the businesses we built, but we recognize the value of bringing in leadership whose strengths are better aligned with the demands of scaling. Handing over day-to-day operations to capable executives ensures the company is better positioned for long-term success.
It’s a win-win—for the business, our employees, and our customers.
