We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Josh Sauls a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Josh, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I found my purpose through the piano. I started playing when I was 7, just picking out melodies and learning the basics. At first, it was just something I did, something I was good at. But everything changed in middle school. I remember playing a particular song with a chorus that hit me differently. As I played, I felt something deep stir inside me—like I wasn’t just pressing keys anymore; I was speaking from my soul. That was the moment I realized music wasn’t just a hobby for me, it was a calling. It became the way I expressed what words couldn’t. Music gave me a voice, and through it, I found my purpose.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I created In Tune Inc. because I’ve seen firsthand how many talented people with a true passion for music get turned away—not because they weren’t good enough, but because they didn’t know how to read music or understand certain terms needed to pass an audition. I watched people with incredible voices and raw talent be dismissed simply because they lacked formal training. And honestly, it broke my heart.
Music is supposed to be for everyone, but too often, access to knowledge becomes the barrier. That’s why I started In Tune Inc.—to be a space where music lovers, especially those who didn’t grow up with lessons or resources, can learn what they need to succeed. Whether it’s learning to read music, understanding rhythm, or just building confidence, we’re here to make sure no one is left behind. My goal is that when someone walks into their next audition, they don’t just hope—they know they’re ready.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, the three qualities that had the biggest impact on my journey were determination, being open-minded, and being adaptable.
Determination kept me moving forward even when things got tough or when I felt like giving up. There were times I questioned if I was doing the right thing, but I had to remind myself why I started and push through.
Being open-minded helped me learn from others, accept new ideas, and grow beyond what I thought I knew. Some of my greatest breakthroughs came when I let go of the “right” way to do something and opened myself up to a new approach.
Adaptability was—and still is—key. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is to never be afraid to make an adjustment. We make small adjustments every single day without even realizing it—changing plans, shifting perspectives, reworking goals. It’s a part of life, and the more comfortable you get with change, the stronger you become.
To anyone just starting their journey: keep your eyes on your dreams, and don’t let fear of change or failure hold you back. Stay determined, stay open, and stay flexible—and you’ll be amazed at what you can achieve.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
The number one challenge I’ve been facing is learning how to fully embrace and believe that I am enough.
When I came out of the closet, I didn’t have a lot of support from my immediate family. That kind of rejection stays with you. And then, years later, I experienced another painful moment—being treated like I wasn’t enough by someone I really cared about. That moment hit hard. It gave me this empty, hollow feeling that I carried around for a long time. I couldn’t figure out what was missing, so I buried myself in learning—trying to be good at everything, as if mastering a hundred things would somehow fill that gap or prove my worth.
But recently, I’ve started doing something different. I’ve started reminding myself—every single day—that I am enough. Just as I am. I’ve realized that nobody has it all together, and we’re all just figuring life out. That realization has changed the way I create and experience music. It’s given my music a different tune—one that’s more honest, more vulnerable, and more connected to who I truly am.
I’m still growing, still healing, but this stage of my life has taught me that being human is enough. And so am I.
