We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jordan Davies a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jordan, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.
Throughout my life as an athlete, I’ve had all types of coaches, and I’m fortunate to say, the majority of them were good and all of them taught me valuable life lessons.
I’m not sure which coach helped me develop the “It Could Always Be Worse” mentality, but everyday that helps to drive my positive mindset. One of my first mentors, Jason, instilled in me that an unwritten rule in this industry is to always make their day better. Now, I’ve adapted the mindset that it could always be worse, but I’m here to make it better.
As a gym owner, not everyone is fortunate enough to have an adult-sized playground to work in. They come to us having dealt with frustrating coworkers, stressful commutes and irritating family members. All day long, they’ve pent up this stress and frustration with no outlet. My gym is their outlet, and not too long into my career as a personal trainer, I learned that the last thing I want to do is be a plug in their outlet.
Days are hard.
My coworkers are frustrating.
My commute is stressful.
My family irritates me (remember, my husband is my coworker and my parents are my clients).
But when that clock strikes 5:00 AM, it’s time to put my happy face on, show them why I fell in love with fitness and to be the outlet that can help turn their day around. My day could always be worse and so could their’s, but it’s my job to make it better.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is Jordan Davies, and I am the co-owner of Complete Performance alongside my husband. Our focus is on family fitness wherein we train general population strength classes and semi-private personal training while also training middle and high school athletes in sports performance.
We knew early on that combining our passions for training could be a beautiful business model, and with an incredible opportunity on the line, we jumped at it. Thankfully we did as we had no idea the world would change just 6 months later in March of 2020.
Posing as the most challenging time in our lives, we made it through and have been able to fully step into our vision as a gym focused on fitness for the entire family.
Working as a coach and personal trainer is a unique profession. You have the opportunity to share in so many incredible moments with your clients (reaching a goal weight, fitting into a new clothing size, making the sports team), but there’s no joy like seeing someone accomplish something they once believed they couldn’t.
Our mission is to keep fitness and health fun for all. Lunges and push ups won’t always be fun, but if we can create a fun and supportive environment through challenges, competitions, and education, we know you’ll continue down the path for wellness.
Moving into summer, this is the time to introduce your athlete to strength and conditioning. Surrounded by expert coaches, you’ll learn the fundamentals of exercise and build lifelong skill to make you a stronger athlete and human. Registration is currently open for our Summer Sports Program for ages 12 to 18 for all sports and ability levels. We can’t wait to welcome your family into ours!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
We all go into business thinking we have the skills necessary to do better than the current industry standard. While you might have a superior skill or service, I believe leading with an open mind and listening ear were so important for our foundation and growth. Hire mentors, join community leadership and networking groups and most importantly, listen to your potential clients. If you approach with an open mind and can pair your idea with what the customer or industry desires, you’ll find a world of success.
Transparency
In a world of immediate gratification and ease of access to information, I believe we still battle so many unknowns. Potential clients approach with so much fear and anxiety over whether or not this service will work for them. Be transparent with them! Through my time, I’ve found more reliable customers by simply being open with them. I”m very clear in our services, expectations and rates of anticipated progress. Because of this, I believe I have found far fewer disgruntled customers and many more who are here to support our vision.
Commitment
Entrepreneurship is not for the faint of heart. Setbacks and challenges are inevitable, and while I hope you don’t face a 2020-sized setback, I hope you can face every challenge with that level of commitment and passion. This is your dream! Stay committed to it, see it through and trust this is your purpose.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
They say the first year of business is filled with valuable lessons and skills developed, but nobody talks about your first year as a new parent and business owner. I did everything to prepare our business for this husband and wife team to enter parenthood, but you know what they say – “you don’t know what you don’t know.”
Through the last 15 months, I’ve learned more about myself, my clients and our business than I ever thought possible!
While our gym is centered around family fitness and health, there was always a lingering sense of imposter syndrome in the background not having a family like my clients. Through the last 15 months, I’ve learned more about the struggle to juggle it all; however, I’ve also learned how incredibly blessed I am to have a supportive family that encourages my health and fitness. This year has forced me to get creative in where I get my workouts in (a baby is a GREAT weight!), when I get my work done and how I take time for my family. I love routine, but this has challenged my adaptability and I’m so grateful for it.
As a business owner, the step back from the coaching floor has allowed me to learn more about our business – what we do well, where we can grow and where we need to let things go to allow other professionals in our network thrive in what they’re best at. This is a skill I will continue to learn, but I’m grateful I’ve grown as a leader and business owner to better lead our team, clients and community.
