Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to John Bermudez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
John, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
One of the things I do to overcome imposter syndrome is to, “check my resume”. What things have I done in the past that are similar to the task I’m trying to accomplish now? It doesn’t have to be the exact same thing. What challenges have I overcome previously that I can reflect on to give me the confidence to believe I can and am capable of doing the thing at present?
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am the owner of Endurance Fitness Performance. My business provides coaching services for runners and endurance athletes of all levels. We are proud to have coached athletes across the country complete their first marathons, triathlons and ultra marathons. Our personalized coaching programs have helped newbie and experienced athletes alike complete Ironman races, qualify for the Boston Marathon or PR their local half marathon. At Endurance Fitness Performance, we truly believe there is an inner athlete inside all of us! Put in the work and the results will come! We get to do this.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Patience. No one wants it, But it’s an inevitable part of the process. You can’t skip steps on the way to greatness. Your journey whether completing a marathon, losing body fat or earning a degree has to navigate through all the steps. Running has taught me to focus on the mile I’m in and when that is done, focus on the next.
Enjoy the process. Goals are great to have. But if your solely focused on the outcome, you lose the lessons learned along the
way. With endurance sports, there are plenty of gems to be learned during the training journey that apply to life. Make sure you’re listening to those nuggets of knowledge along the way.
Strength training & mobility. Directly speaking about endurance sports, too many budding and experienced athletes neglect these two crucial components. Strength training will make you faster more than any racing shoe or lightweight bike. Mobility will ensure you’re able to enjoy your sports for years to come. Doing both will allow you to stay resilient and injury free.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
I work with athletes of all skill levels and experience. I don’t care about talent. I care about your work ethic. Are you a hustler, willing to commit, challenge yourself and put in the work to be better? Talent is meaningless if you lack those traits. I’m also focused on making your training experience fun! Afterall, most of us aren’t professional athletes. Work hard. Play hard!
