Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lindsey Vidmar. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lindsey, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Growing up, I always gravitated toward the arts and was determined to pursue my passion. I wasn’t sure what my niche was at that time, so I was generally painting to express my creativity. On January 22nd, 2020, I painted my first portrait of my dog Mila, and it lit a fire in me. I was extremely proud of the work I produced and I knew in my heart it was because my love for this dog was immense. Following this singular painting I had done, my community was overjoyed seeing my progress and wanted one of their own. I was in shock, excited but also fearful because I had never sold paintings before, especially at a young age. That same year, I started my very first fundraiser selling custom pet portraits and donated almost half of my profits to three local animal shelters in the Chicagoland area. The feeling I endured was nothing like I ever had experienced before. I felt that deep down within my art, there would be a purpose. Not for the money, or exposure but to be able to give back to animals in need in the process so that that our four legged friends could find a connection like I have with Mila in their forever homes. I found purpose in my work and within myself through Mila. I am now 22 years old and have established a small business named after her called Mila’s Painted Paws.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
In 2025, I now run a small business within my home called Mila’s Painted Paws, with my CEO, Mila, by my side every step of the way. Throughout the last 5 years, she has become the inspiration behind what I do. My goal is to further educate myself as I work towards my bachelors degree in the arts and continue to do what I love while also creating change. I have had the opportunity to donate a mural at a local animal shelter (16 years old), attend dog-related events, work alongside other businesses to promote animal shelters, and donate what I can (past shelter donations: Chicagoland Dog Rescue, Hinsdale Humane Society, The Anticruelty Society, Mutts of the Midway, Live Like Roo, Canine Therapy Corps, and selling prints to raise funds for a memorial brick for the fallen K9 Hudson). Recently, in the last two years, collaborate with Kendra Scott to raise funding for our Chicagoland shelters while customers shop as well. This past year we have expanded custom products onto purses and handheld works for on the go…keychains, while still including custom planter boxes, canvas works, wood slices, and liquor bottles.
I honor Mila for my successes as a young pet portrait artist. I know that in my heart, I would not be where I am today without her and would not be able to give back what I can now if she hadn’t made such an impact on my life personally. Throughout each painting I create, I know that I am impacting someone, whether it is by sharing the love of dogs, honoring the ones who have passed, or remembering the loyal companions that stick by our side unapologetically. I will forever be grateful for my four-legged friend, who can’t say much but understands it all. Mila has given me a reason to be myself confidently and loudly while being my purpose. I hope that everyone has the opportunity to have a pawprint left on their heart.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back on my journey as a young artist I would like to highlight areas of confidence, communication and drive. When you are beginning a new step especially at a young age, I remember the feeling of intimidation that was constant. As I progressed through my work I had pushed myself to stay true to what I love doing and it would help me flourish. Seeing what I am able to produce and share with my peers the last 5 years by communicating, reaching out and asking questions has helped my journey immensely, not only within the work I produce but also making a difference for our four legged friends in the process.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
My biggest area is growth in the past 12 months has been taking big steps towards growth in my business and myself. I am normally a very reserved individual but when it comes to creating pet portraits and sharing my story I open up immensely. Whether it is through experimentation with new products, or reaching out to new groups to share what I love with the world. I have taught myself to not be scared and take the risk!
