Meet Genesis Mayorga

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Genesis Mayorga. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Genesis, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

I got my resilience in 2019 after I quit my last 9-5 job. I was working in a nursing home as a Medical Records manager and I knew there was more to life than just sitting at a desk and having the same routine. After 5 years of working there, I decided on September 13, 2019 that I was going to quit my job and pursue my brand GENIGEN. I knew it wasn’t going to be easy and I had no idea what I was doing which is why I got into the financial services industry. I was no longer working for anyone and had to rely on myself to be my own boss and bring in money to pay my bills. Honestly, I was not in a position to do so, but I was tired of not taking myself serious and putting others first that did not value my work ethic. I also started doing Gig work and anything that can bring in income because being an Entrepreneur if we don’t work, then money doesn’t come in. Being around ambitious people like myself and reading self development books have really helped build my resilience. In 2020, I started my cosmetics brand. GENIGEN COSMETICS. It was hard to keep up with new launches and I really had no idea, what I was doing. I was learning everything on my own as I went. Whatever I learned being in the financial service industry is what I was applying to my business. In 2022, I went back to school to become an Esthetician. I had to complete a little over 600 hours so I can qualify to take my licensing exam. I also had to physically be at school for 8 hours a day/4 days a week. It was hard because I had a lot of debt and I could only work 3 days a week. I am so grateful I was able to balance all of that. It was hard for 6 months but so worth it because February 2023 I passed my exam and became a licensed Esthetician (not my first try, I passed my second try). Shortly after in June 2023 I opened my studio GENIGEN SKIN. Again, I wasn’t in the position to do so but I knew that if I put myself in a positions to grow, I wouldn’t have a choice but to make it happen and doing just that, has helped me build my resilience. Listening to podcasts and reading self development books like “The energy bus” by Jon Gordon, “13 things mentally strong people don’t do” by Amy Morin and “It’s all in your head” by Russ, and I can go on. I love books. I only try to watch, read and listen to things that will help me be the best version of myself.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I started my GENIGEN brand in 2014, strictly on YouTube and Instagram. That’s when I got into makeup, I because a Certified Makeup Artist and I would film makeup tutorials and vlogs for years. It’s been hard to grow on social media, I wasn’t as consistent and I wasn’t posting with intentions. In 2020, I started GENIGEN COSMETICS, I launched with 3 different shades of Lipkits and 5 different style of lashes. It was going good for a few years but it got hard financially, and even marketing was hard for me because I had no idea what I was doing. I just had a lot of passion for makeup and for making people feeling beautiful. Something I struggled with growing up was feeling self confident and beautiful in my own skin because of a lot of past trauma’s I went through and because I myself was struggling with really bad acne. That’s why makeup was everything to me at the time. It helped me cover up my imperfections. After it getting harder to keep up with GENIGEN COSMETICS, I started thinking about how I can take my brand to the next level. That’s when in 2022 I decided to go back to school to become a licensed Esthetician. I had no idea what I was getting myself into, I did not know what an Esthetician was but a friend of mine told me it was skincare and beauty. I had nothing else going on in my life at the time, only doing gig work (Instacart) and creating content. I took a chance and got approved to go back to school. First day or school, I had no clue that I had to take a state exam for this. I needed to learn about skin, anatomy, ingredients, skin conditions, chemicals, massages and more. My first day of school, I find all this out and internally I’m sitting there freaking out with the urge to just quit. I decided to stay because I already committed to this and I was embarrassed to walk out. One month in, I fell in looooove with giving facials. Since I was already dealing with acne myself and I had gone to a dermatologist for help and he put me on oral antibiotics and accutane. That really intense treatment did not help, a month later, I ended up in Urgent care because I was so sick. So I never got to actually complete the treatment. At this point, everything I was learning made be obsessed with skin. I was obsessed with getting my hands on everyones skin, just to practice and give results. I became very passionate about giving all my classmates results. It felt good to not try and control the outcome for once. I had to learn to be a student and not be embarrassed to ask the professor for help or for criticism. My intentions were to learn as much as I could while I was there. I also started practicing outside of school. So after 8hours plus of class I would come home and have a client. I wasn’t charging at first, but my first practice client at home tipped me $60 and at that moment I knew I was on the right track. It was more than the tip. It was the fact that I made her feel confident in her own skin. Before I finished school I already had my lease signed to my new suite in the city of Lakewood, CA. I knew that by doing that I had no choice but to pass my exam. I did not pass my first try in January 2023, but I did pass my 2nd try 1 week later which was was in February 2023. Since the suite I leased was a new build I was waiting for the construction to be over. Meanwhile I was taking clients at home in my bedroom and saving and investing into skincare, facial machines and more for GENIGEN SKIN. Finally in June 2023, GENIGEN SKIN opens in the city of Lakewood. I am the CEO and founder of GENIGEN SKIN and the whole GENIGEN brand. GENIGEN SKIN, is a luxury spa the focuses on giving your skin results. It’s much more than a facial to me, it make me so happy to see you feel happy and confident in your own skin. GENIGEN SKIN restores self confidence and gives you glowy skin. It makes me feel happy when my clients tell me they don’t wear as much makeup any more or they don’t wear makeup at all anymore. GENIGEN SKIN is bigger than me. It’s about bring your confidence back. I still create content, just the content has shifted to more skincare. I try my best to educate on my @genigenskin instagram and also mix in some wellness, since it all ties in together. On my personal page I create more relatable content, some motivational content, a bit of my entrepreneurial side and of course my sense of humor so people can can get to know who I am.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Three important qualities to have are being consistent, being open to learning from everyone, and working on healing your inner self, so that you can be the best version of yourself. My family was not always supportive of my decision to leave my 9-5 job. Again, I don’t blame them due to the circumstances I was in and plus I have always been very ambitious, so they probably saw me as delusional but never vocalized it. You do have to have a bit of delusion to achieve these dreams god has given you. There were many times I wanted to quit my business because things were not going good for me and sometimes my family’s words fed into me wanting to quit. But in my heart, I knew this is what I really wanted and I knew that these hard times are part of the journey and for every level up there will be a tower moment. We never look back at the moment you achieved your goal, we look back at the journey that got us there. So now I shifted my mindset from, “Why is this happening to me?” to “What is this trying to teach me?” and that has kept me going. It’s actually a good thing to fail because that’s how you learn. When everything goes good, there’s nothing to learn. You’re comfortable. I also have finally accepted that life is always going to throw curb balls at you, to help you elevate your life. So I always look forward to getting through whatever tribulation I am going through because I know something good is coming out it. Also, a big game changer has for me, has been to never be a know it all, by being “a student” you will be surprised how much you can learn from someone, whether it’s patience, a skill, honestly it can be anything and you can learn something from everyone, even a kid. I’m glad that although there have been many times I wanted to quit my brand, I didn’t. I kept going. I just have to pivot when needed to elevate. Once you know who you really are and do the inner work within, nothing, anyone says will phase you because you know who you are and that’s all that matters. No one can take that from you.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?

There are 2 books that have played an important part in my self development one of them is “The Energy Bus” by Jon Gordon and. “You Are A Badass” by Jin Sincero. Growing up I didn’t like reading books because I would read a line and re-read and not understand what I read. But when I was tired of being depressed, anxious, stuck, no self confidence, no self esteem, no self love, just overthinking, over eating, over everything and living this routine life. I wouldn’t even go out to eat with my friends on week day after work because “I had work the next day.” So uptight! I know! LOL. I was at target one day and I saw this book “You are a badass” and I picked up and opened a page and immediately got hooked so I purchased it and started going to beach everyday after work to read a chapter and I learned to meditate. That’s when I started building my connection with god and myself. This book made me realize that I was living a life for others, not for me. That’s why I was so miserable. I was living a life, my mom wanted me to live. Which it wasn’t a bad one, she rather see me at a office job, working for someone else. I was doing everything to make her happy but I wasn’t happy because I was so worried about her criticism for the life I actually wanted. That’s when I realized I had no control of my life and I needed to start doing things that would make me happy. This book made me start taking the steps to pursue the life I want. I am still not where I want to be but I can honestly say that I know I will be there one day. For now I’m enjoying every moment. The second book that has played a big role in my development is “The Energy Bus” by Jon Gordon. This is a short read but it changed my life. I always recommend it to everyone to shift they way they see life because honestly, mindset is everything. This book hit home because I used to be so miserable, as soon as waking up. I hated my life. When it shouldn’t be that way, everyday is beautiful and there are many things to be grateful for even if things are not going the way you want it. What you have, someone else wishes they had. So it’s important to value what you already have. This book talks about a man named “Jorge,” he had a really great job but had marriage problems, seems as if he was miserable with his life and was always working. One morning his car broke down and everything was already going wrong so that was the last thing he needed. He ended up having to take the bus to work for a week and was so mad about it, until he met the most happiest bus driver and people on there. They helped shift Jorges mindset from victim mentality to problem solving mentality. They even helped him solve some problems at work and helped him fix his marriage. It changed his life for the better. He was happier, his marriage got better, he got a promotion at work and he started living in the present life. He actually started riding the bus to work now instead of driving because the good energy rubbed off on him. So for me it helped take control of my happiness and made me be mindful about the people I surround myself with, are they feeding into my growth or are they bringing me down? We have control of our happiness, never forget that. It’s ok to be upset about things but don’t stay consumed in that for too long. It will have you miss out on the beautiful things that are currently in front of you.
