We were lucky to catch up with Callie Byerly recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Callie , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
For me, Move Club San Antonio started with a personal journey. I was going through a time in my life where I needed healing—physically, mentally, and emotionally. Movement became my medicine. Walking, breathing fresh air, connecting with others—it grounded me and gave me clarity. But I also saw how many people in my community didn’t have access to safe spaces for fitness or support systems for wellness.
So I created Move Club San Antonio not just to move bodies, but to move hearts and minds. It’s a grassroots effort rooted in compassion and equity. I wanted to bring people together—seniors who feel isolated, moms looking for community, individuals managing chronic conditions, or just someone needing a reason to get out of the house.
My purpose is to make wellness feel possible for everyone. Not perfect. Not exclusive. Just possible, step by step, together.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m the founder of Move Club San Antonio, a grassroots wellness initiative dedicated to making health and movement accessible to all—especially in underserved communities. We offer free and low-cost programs like senior mobility classes, mental health and gardening workshops, walking meetups, and fitness events that promote connection, joy, and well-being.
What excites me most is seeing how simple acts of movement can create powerful ripples in people’s lives. We’re not just helping people exercise—we’re building community, restoring confidence, and supporting mental and emotional health through every step.
We’re proud to share that we’ve just launched our brand-new website, which makes it easier than ever to learn about upcoming classes, events, and ways to get involved. You can visit us at www.moveclubsa.org to explore our programs and join the movement.
At its core, Move Club San Antonio is about creating inclusive spaces where people of all ages and abilities feel supported and inspired to move—not just physically, but toward better overall wellness. One step at a time, we’re building a healthier, more connected San Antonio.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey with Move Club San Antonio are:
Looking back, three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey with Move Club San Antonio are:
1. Empathy
Understanding the real needs of the community—whether it’s access to safe spaces, mental health support, or simply someone to walk with—has been at the heart of everything we do. Empathy allows you to build something meaningful with people, not just for them.
Advice: Spend time listening before acting. Volunteer, attend community events, ask questions, and let people’s stories guide your approach.
2. Resilience
There have been setbacks—small class turnouts, limited resources, moments of doubt—but staying committed to the purpose kept me grounded. Progress doesn’t always look like big wins; sometimes it’s one person showing up and leaving with a smile.
Advice: Expect obstacles, but don’t let them stop you. Build a mission that’s bigger than your fears and stay consistent, even when growth is slow.
3. Resourcefulness
Running a grassroots organization means you often wear many hats—coordinator, marketer, grant writer, and motivator. Being creative with what you have, and seeking partnerships instead of waiting for perfection, has helped us grow faster than expected.
Advice: Start where you are, use what you have, and build as you go. You don’t need to have everything figured out—just the courage to begin and adapt.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Yes—we’re actively looking for partners, collaborators, and donors who share our commitment to health equity and community wellness.
We welcome collaborations with:
Health educators, fitness instructors, and mental health professionals
Schools, nonprofits, and grassroots organizations
Local businesses and artists interested in giving back through wellness events
And of course, volunteers who want to uplift our city through movement and service
We also welcome support from donors and sponsors who believe in building healthier, more connected communities. Your support helps us provide free fitness classes, mental health workshops, senior mobility programs, and wellness events across San Antonio—especially in areas that need it most. Together, we can make wellness accessible to all—one step, one class, and one neighborhood at a time.
