Meet Jerwaun ‘Renegade’ Suddun

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jerwaun ‘Renegade’ Suddun a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Jerwaun ‘Renegade’, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?

So contrary to belief I wasn’t always confident and use to have very low self-esteem. My confidence was built from learning to love myself in a world that brought me down since a child. I was bullied as a young kid and it wrecked my confidence and diminished my self-esteem. As an adult, I learned how important healing is and went on a journey of uprooting, reflecting, confronting, unlearning and relearning which in turn has had a dramatic positive effect and change on who and how I am as a person.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I am a leader and movement Artist specializing in the World Wide dance art form and culture known as Krump, leading the Michigan Krump event. The most special thing about being in this is that no matter where I go in the world I can connect with other dancers in the culture and be treated as if we’ve known each other for years even if its my first time meeting them. Another special thing about what I do is how Im able to reach and impact people through my dance, through my physical movement; when I do showcases how people have expressed that they cried, teared up, hair on their arms stood up or just felt emotional. Being able to show people that Krump can be more and is more than what people usually only see or perceive. The most exciting thing is how Krump culture will get together via sessions or Krump events and the culture does what the culture does from battles, sessions and the hype that we give that other dance styles don’t have nor do.
Currently, professional wise I have been working with Motor City Street Dance Academy and focused on giving and or creating more opportunities for those of the Michigan Krump community, continue to keep spreading Krump and putting a new light on the dance style doing different things and experiencing more Krump communities around the world.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

I believe the 3 things that were most impactful on my journey were my quality of heart, being able to follow the lead of better leaders and overall being teachable. My quality of heart for what I do is what has kept me going, loving the journey even when I’m just simply dancing just to dance. Having the heart that I have I believe is what gained peoples trust, to trust me with the process of teaching them, leading them, creating and maintaining a safe space for them. Being able to follow the lead of leaders better than me that had came before me, allowing me to watch and listen to their “blueprints” of how they did things and applying to my own journey as I grew into my own roles. And being overall teachable, being able to hear what someone says and almost immediately catching on to the knowledge they’re giving me.
The advice I have for people early in their journey to best develop or improve these things are: 1, always check your “heart posture” meaning always make sure your heart is in the right place in and or with whatever it is you do. Always evaluate yourself to be able to hold yourself accountable when you slip, and love yourself so you can forgive yourself when you do. 2, Be a student, always. No matter how much you may learn or how great you get in whatever it is you do, if you remain a student even when you’re a leader you will forever grow. When you stop being a student is when you will be stuck. 3, Have an open mind when receiving information but only from credible sources. Understand that people have their own experiences and half of the information they have to offer is rooted from their own experiences, trails, tribulations, failures and success. These experiences can teach you how to do something or how not to do something, either way, you learned something.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

I am definitely looking for people to partner and or collaborate with. The type of people Im looking to collaborate with are dancers of all kinds of styles as I do more than krump, film makers as I recently shot my first mini film with my first acting role, videographers, visionaries, event creators, grant writers and even music artist. They can connect with me by emailing our email address dirtyglovekrump@gmail.com or by following & messaging me on Instagram @jt_vs_renegade.
