Meet Erika Vaught

We were lucky to catch up with Erika Vaught recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Erika, great to have you with us today and excited to have you share your wisdom with our readers. Over the years, after speaking with countless do-ers, makers, builders, entrepreneurs, artists and more we’ve noticed that the ability to take risks is central to almost all stories of triumph and so we’re really interested in hearing about your journey with risk and how you developed your risk-taking ability.

I believe that the development of my ability to take risk has been investing in myself. The more confidence I feel in myself reflects on my ability to trust myself in a time of great risk.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I have been a hair stylist for 13 years. I specialize in color and especially creative coloring. I started my hair journey in Detroit Michigan. Eventually I decided to take a risk and move to Los Angeles. I have been lucky enough to be behind the chair in la for 2 years.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back I would say my mentors were really the most impactful to me and my journey. I have been honored to work with and under an amazing group hair stylists and creatives alike. I always give advice about using mentorship’s to further your skill and educated in the hair industry. Being able to be hands on at the same time as learning had increased my overall confidence and ability to become a well rounded hair stylist and artist.

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?

My biggest area of growth this past year has definitely been killing my impostor syndrome. Some years are harder than others and this was what I was presented with this past year. It has become a huge year for growth and reflection while I navigated these new feelings and emotions.
