Meet Emelia Nwokobia

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Emelia Nwokobia. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Emelia below.

Emelia, thank you so much for joining us and offering your lessons and wisdom for our readers. One of the things we most admire about you is your generosity and so we’d love if you could talk to us about where you think your generosity comes from.

My generosity is deeply rooted in the heart and spirit of the woman who raised me, my mother.

She taught me from a young age that true beauty is found in how we treat others, especially in their most vulnerable moments. Watching her give selflessly, love unconditionally, and uplift everyone around her shaped the foundation of who I am and how I run my business.

SlayedLocks isn’t just about wigs, it’s about restoring confidence, offering comfort, and showing compassion. Every unit we create, every service we provide, is a reflection of my mother’s love and legacy. Her journey with cancer fuels my passion to give back, especially to those facing hair loss from cancer, alopecia, or other medical conditions.

So if you ever wonder where the heart of SlayedLocks comes from, know it started with Janice.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I’m the founder of SlayedLocks, a wig brand born out of compassion, creativity, and purpose. What started as a passion for beauty and hairstyling quickly evolved into a mission-driven business focused on helping individuals who are experiencing hair loss due to cancer, alopecia, or other medical conditions.

At SlayedLocks, we specialize in crafting custom, high-quality wigs that not only enhance outer beauty but restore inner confidence. What makes our brand truly special is the heart behind it, each unit is created with care, empathy, and a deep understanding of how transformative hair can be for someone’s self-esteem.

One of the most exciting parts of what I do is seeing the emotional impact our wigs have. Whether it’s a survivor feeling herself again or a young girl smiling at her reflection after hair loss, those are the moments that make this work incredibly rewarding.

We also offer a wig revamp and refresh service, where clients can mail in their wigs to be professionally washed, styled, and restored. It’s one of our most loved services, especially for those who rely on their wigs daily.

Looking ahead, we’re expanding in a few big ways. I’m currently building out content and educational resources to teach others the art of wig-making, from beauty lovers to aspiring entrepreneurs..

Ultimately, SlayedLocks is about more than hair, it’s about healing, hope, and helping people feel like themselves again

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Looking back, three qualities have truly shaped my journey with SlayedLocks: resilience, empathy, and adaptability.

Resilience was essential. Starting a purpose-driven business, especially one that serves individuals facing medical challenges, isn’t always easy. There were moments of doubt, financial strain, and uncertainty. But I stayed the course. My advice to anyone early in their journey is this: Don’t let slow progress make you question your calling. Build your foundation with God & patience, and always stay rooted in your “why.”

Empathy is at the core of everything I do. Working with cancer patients and individuals with alopecia requires a deep level of understanding and care. If you’re in a service-based business, make empathy your superpower. Really listen to your clients, make them feel seen, and show up for them in ways that matter.

Adaptability has also been key. The beauty and healthcare industries are constantly evolving, and I’ve had to pivot, learn new skills, and stay open to change. Whether it’s shifting how I market, learning new techniques, or expanding services, being flexible has helped SlayedLocks grow. For anyone just starting out, Always stay open to change and don’t be afraid to reinvent your approach when necessary.

At the end of the day, building something impactful takes more than strategy, it takes heart. Focus on growing through your challenges, and never stop learning. Your transparency and unique journey will inspire others more than you realize.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

We are always open to partnering and collaborating with individuals and brands who align with the heart and mission of SlayedLocks.

I’m especially interested in working with:
• Beauty professionals who are passionate about hair, beauty, and confidence restoration—especially those who are interested in sharing our story and their services with their audiences.
• Healthcare professionals, nonprofits, or organizations that support cancer and alopecia communities. I’d love to collaborate on events, donation drives, or awareness campaigns to reach more people in need.
• Photographers, videographers, and creatives who want to co-create powerful content that tells the stories behind the wigs and the women who wear them.
• Educators or course platforms looking to offer beauty-based or wellness-aligned educational content. We are expanding into teaching wig-making, business development skills.
