We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Scott Blackerby. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Scott below.
Hi Scott, so excited to have you with us today and we are really interested in hearing your thoughts about how folks can develop their empathy? In our experience, most folks want to be empathic towards others, but in a world where we are often only surrounded by people who are very similar to us, it can sometimes be a challenge to develop empathy for others who might not be as similar to us. Any thoughts or advice?
Having been given many “second chances”, I’ve come to understand that it is better to understand than to be understood. Everyone has a journey and many times that journey requires many “lessons” that help us to grow. My road has taught me to value these lessons.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I started working as a professional chef shortly after graduating culinary school in 2001. I struggled for several years with abusing alcohol, but got sober in 2005. Today, I try to help people in recovery find stable income while working the 12 Steps. I believe in giving freely to others what was given to me. My catering firm is small and specializes in French Cuisine. I typically will do events no larger than 100 persons.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, I think that a good work ethic and knowledge are very important. However, nothing in this world beats perseverance. People working in any industry that they love or are passionate about, should always see rejection as an opportunity to drive forward. This quality has always served me well.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
They taught me the value of keeping my word and owning my mistakes. It’s often easier to rationalize a behavior instead of taking ownership. Today, I make amends when I’m wrong. My parents were big believers in this and I think about that frequently.
