We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Corinne Jedwood Rechter a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Corinne, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
In my opinion, resilience is often defined as the ability to bounce back, but as a CEO, I’ve learned it’s really about holding true to your values when things get tough.
When we launched TailWag Resorts, we set out to create a high-end, deeply personalized experience for dogs — not just another daycare. The early days were challenging. We faced pressure to lower prices, cut corners, and scale faster than we were ready for. But compromising was never an option.
Resilience, for me and for TailWag, meant staying anchored in what we believed: a low dog-to-staff ratio, a safe and calm environment, and highly personalized care. Even when growth was slow, we stayed true to those standards. Over time, the right clients found us — people who valued the quality and personalization we refused to sacrifice.
Where do I get my resilience from? From experience. After founding eight companies across different parts of the world, I’ve learned that no matter what happens, if you have a clear vision and stay true to it, you can weather any challenge. I trust that no matter what comes my way, I will figure it out and find creative solutions. Resilience, for me, is built on vision, values, and the confidence earned through experience.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m the founder and CEO of TailWag Resorts, a luxury dog daycare and boarding facility located in North County San Diego. Our mission goes beyond providing exceptional care — we’re raising the bar in dog care. Our vision is to transform the lives of dogs and the humans around them, while creating the best possible experience for our team.
At TailWag Resorts, we believe dogs deserve more than just a safe place — they deserve a personalized, enriching experience where they can thrive. We maintain a low dog-to-staff ratio to ensure each dog gets individual attention, and we tailor each dog’s day based on their personality, preferences, and needs. Whether a dog loves social play or prefers quieter enrichment activities, we create an environment where they feel seen, understood, and cared for.
What excites me most is that we’re not only impacting the lives of dogs, but also building a trusted community for their families — and at the same time, creating a place where our team members can grow, feel proud, and love the work they do.
The inspiration behind TailWag came from a simple belief: that dogs change our lives for the better, and they deserve care that reflects their importance in our families. I wanted to create a place where that bond is honored every day.
Looking ahead, we’re expanding our impact with a Dog Handler Certification Program designed for young adults interested in careers in animal care — shaping the future of the pet care industry. We’re also preparing to launch our franchise model, offering others the opportunity to spread the TailWag love to new communities. It’s an exciting next step in our mission to transform dog care, not just locally, but nationally.
At TailWag, we’re not just caring for dogs — we’re helping dogs, families, and future caregivers live better lives together.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, three qualities have been especially important in my journey:
1. Passion for Dog Care: Everything starts with genuine passion. For me, the love and respect I have for dogs is what drives every decision at TailWag Resorts. It’s not just a business, it’s a mission to raise the standard of care for dogs and create a positive impact on their lives and the lives of their families. My advice: if you’re starting a business, make sure it’s rooted in something you deeply care about. Passion fuels perseverance.
2. Vision and Clarity: You have to know not just what you’re building, but why. Vision acts like a compass when decisions get hard. Being crystal clear about TailWag’s purpose – Raising the bar in dog care: transforming the lives of dogs and the humans around them – kept us focused even when challenges arose. My advice: spend time defining your vision early, and revisit it often to stay aligned.
3. Leadership and People Skills: No one builds anything great alone. Learning how to build a great team, lead and inspire, has been key to TailWag’s success. You need to attract people who believe in your vision and create an environment where they can thrive. My advice: Attract team members who are aligned with your vision.
For anyone early in their journey: build around your passion, stay clear on your “why,” and focus on creating a team and culture that can grow with you.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Yes. We’re entering an exciting new chapter at TailWag Resorts! We’re preparing to open new locations through a franchise model, and we’re looking for partners who share our passion for exceptional dog care and community building.
We want to collaborate with individuals who are not just business-minded, but truly care about raising the standards in dog care, people who believe in creating enriching, personalized experiences for dogs and want to be part of a brand that values excellence, compassion, and innovation.
If you love dogs, believe in our mission of transforming the lives of dogs and their families, and are excited about being a leader in the premium pet care space, we’d love to connect.
