We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dominic Parker. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dominic below.
Dominic, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I am the second youngest of my seven siblings. Growing up with five older siblings, I’ve had the benefit of watching them navigate various challenges throughout life. Some very typical challenges, like finding success in higher learning and choosing career paths. But also some less typical challenges, like figuring out what to do when our mother Debby Parker was diagnosed with an early onset case of Alzheimer’s Disease. In particular, my sister Rochelle showed me through her actions that family is the most important thing. Without the wellbeing of our loved ones, we don’t have much at all. She took me and my younger brother Kenny in at a time when she was just getting a foothold on her own adult life. She became a mother to us in lieu of tragedy. She’s a strong, intelligent, loving woman and if I even have an ounce of her resiliency at this point, then I feel I can deal with whatever this life inevitably throws my way.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My musical project/persona is called The Sympathy Of All Things. It’s a project I began in 2020, with the release of my first album Translucence. Though I had previous experience playing and performing in bands (Sound Curfew and .XOM), what makes The Sympathy Of All Things special is that it is an artistic expression derived from a single source: myself. With full creative control, I have been able to craft a singular, yet experimental sonic palette. My songs range from folksy and melancholic (like my song Sunflower) to more bombastic, fuzzy psych-rock cuts (like my song Mourning Ghosts).
There are a few very exciting things on the horizon for the project this year. First and foremost, I’ve begun rolling out singles to promote my upcoming sophomore album AMARGI, set for release on August 1st, 2025. In addition, I have entered this year’s America’s Next Top Hitmaker competition, giving my band a shot at performing at the Global Citizen Festival in New York City later this year. The only way I’ll get there, however, is with audience support! So if anyone reading this would like to help, they can go vote for The Sympathy Of All Things on America’s Next Top Hitmaker’s website.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
When I look back at my musical journey so far, I can identify three most impactful reflections.
1. Quality of releases are certainly more important than quantity, but you need to be careful not to become so focused on perfection that you don’t release much at all. I fell for this trap and now there’s been five years between my albums!
2. Performing shows is still important to building awareness, but it’s no longer the most important factor in the creative space. Like it or not, bands and artists MUST have a digital presence and they MUST take this aspect of the work seriously!
3. Don’t waste time and energy working with anyone who makes the creative process more difficult than it already inherently is. The best collaborators will help you to streamline the process, not add undue roadblocks and challenges. Protect your space and don’t look back!
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
I’ve got to give a massive shoutout to my producer, bandmate, and friend Diego Hodge of Valley Crest Recording. Since we began working together in 2018, he was been the single most important collaborator in my artistic life. His technical knowledge of music production and engineering, his creative originality, and his unyielding pleasant demeanor have been instrumental (pun fully intended) in my development as an artist. He’s a great musician and an even greater human being. I would encourage any musician in the Los Angeles area to contact him (@valleycrestrecording) and schedule some studio time. You won’t regret it!
