We were lucky to catch up with Xinzi Luo recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Xinzi, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
For an artist, the purpose of continuous creation is of utmost importance. I believe that desire plays a crucial role in the generation of creativity. Whether it is the desire for knowledge and truth about the world, the desire for relationships between the sexes, the continuous desire for expression, the positive and negative desires that drive social development, and so on, these desires constitute the source of creation’s purpose. Specifically regarding my purpose in creating works, I will return to my own life itself. Through a sensory way, I perceive the people and things around me, and then condense and refine them into deeper and more logical philosophical thoughts. I then express them through works in a sensory way. My life has provided me with endless nourishment. As long as you fully experience it, you will find that inspiration keeps emerging continuously. There is no need to deliberately search for it. The purpose of creation will naturally connect and express itself when you open your awareness.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am an artist. I think the most interesting aspect of being an artist is that you are constantly thinking and expressing. During this process, you will constantly discover who you are, your relationship with the surrounding environment, and the meaning of your existence. My artistic works consist of two main parts. The first part is about my studio creations, I paint, make sculptures, perform, and so on. This is my very direct self-expression. The second part is my group creations. In 2021, I joined and founded the art group “Mephistofele” as a core member. We jointly completed various social intervention projects. Through these experiences, I have a deeper understanding of the feeling of co-creating with my group members and my relationship with society and the world. Many of my paintings also draw inspiration from the scenes we created together. Now I have many new insights, and they will be condensed into the studio works produced in my heart.
Additionally, “Mephistofele” will also have a new event at the Tank Shanghai Art Center in July. Friends in Shanghai are welcome to participate.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think it’s the curiosity, the ability to feel, and the ability to act.
Don’t stop your curiosity. This is a key factor for creation. With curiosity, there will be the desire to explore and seek knowledge. During this process, constantly enhance your awareness, including the five senses of your body. Pay attention and reflect on what happens around you, even social events. And the most crucial thing is to keep doing and trying. There’s no problem with failure and progress. Through daily practice or contact with society, you will gain real benefits.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
I usually list the most crucial tasks that need to be done immediately in order of importance, and then complete them one by one. During the process of resolving these issues, internal consumption will gradually decrease.
Engage in exercise, meditation at the appropriate time. It is essential to set aside time to connect with nature. Modern people need to establish a deeper connection with the Earth. It would be even better if one could spend a week in the mountains to experience the atmosphere of the forest.
