Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Trang Nguyen. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Trang, thank you for joining us today and sharing your experiences and acquired wisdom with us. Burnout is a huge topic these days and so we’d love to kick things off by discussing your thoughts on overcoming or avoiding burnout
To be honest, I didn’t completely avoid burnout—I walked through it. As a mother, a wife, and the owner of The Story, every single event was under my care. That meant 365 days of constant movement, emotions, and responsibilities.
There were moments when my body felt like it wanted to shut down. I remember standing there, holding my baby and crying—not from sadness, but from sheer helplessness, not knowing what else I could do. I’ve had days when my chest was in pain because I couldn’t find time to pump at all during long event days, and nights when I barely slept, juggling motherhood and work.
But that’s also the beauty of the journey. These past eight months, alongside my baby and my little family, were filled with love, tears, and countless lessons. Every sleepless night spent planning events, every moment I skipped meals because I was too focused—I lived them all with purpose. In those moments, I felt a spark return. A bit of the old “Quỳnh Trang Idol showbiz” came back.
And when clients smile, or cry tears of joy during an event we created—that’s when I know why I do what I do. Those goosebump moments keep me going.
I wouldn’t say I overcame burnout with a secret formula. I simply kept choosing love—love for my child, my husband, my work, and even for the version of myself I’m slowly rediscovering. And by God’s grace, I’ve had 365 days full of warmth, growth, and the kind of chaos that reminds me I’m alive.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
At The Story, we specialize in event decoration services—from baby showers to birthdays, bridal events, and more. We offer everything from backdrops and welcome stations to photo booths and centerpieces. But what truly sets us apart is that we don’t offer a standard menu of pre-designed options. We don’t ask our clients to pick from a list—we ask them to tell us their story.
Every event we create starts with a conversation. We sit down, listen closely, and design something that reflects the heart of their journey. It’s not just about decorations—it’s about capturing a feeling, a memory, a milestone. That’s why no two events are ever the same.
That also means every week, we’re working on new ideas. We’re constantly brainstorming, adapting, and experimenting—because each client brings something different to the table. And what’s truly exciting is seeing how the same decorative elements can come to life in entirely different ways, depending on the story behind them.
So when people ask, “Anything new coming up at The Story?”—the truth is, everything is new. Every single time. If you take a look at our social media, you’ll see that no two events look the same. That’s because no two clients are the same. And we wouldn’t have it any other way.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, the three most impactful qualities in my journey have been adaptability, a hunger to learn, and sharp decision-making.
First, adaptability. When you run a business—especially in events—nothing ever goes exactly as planned. There were moments when I had to change entire concepts just days before a wedding, or adjust timelines with a baby in my arms. Being able to shift gears without losing focus has been a survival skill.
Second, being willing to learn everything. In this line of work, you’re not just the creative lead—you’re also the accountant, logistics coordinator, HR, customer service… You don’t get to say, “This isn’t my strength.” You make it your strength, or at least learn enough to make smart decisions. And in today’s economy, every detail matters. Every cost, every strategy, every client experience has to be considered carefully.
Third, calculated decision-making. In a world that changes so fast, speed is important—but clarity is more important. I’ve learned to pause just enough to weigh the options, but not so long that momentum is lost.
My advice? Don’t wait to feel “ready.” Start learning right away—from people, from failures, from books, from anything you can get your hands on. And whatever happens, stay flexible. The most resilient businesses, and people, are the ones who adapt quickest and keep moving forward with grace.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
We’ve actually had the privilege of working with many of our dream clients already.
Our ideal client is someone who knows exactly what they want—from the color palette to the overall theme and every tiny detail in between. They come in with a vision, and we’re here to help bring that to life. We always provide a 3D design for the backdrop, and often, after seeing it, our clients take the lead on the rest—carefully choosing the tables, crafting their own centerpieces, picking the perfect cake, and even sourcing a bounce house that fits the vibe.
They’re thoughtful, intentional, and have a quiet sense of luxury. You won’t find them posting constantly on social media or chasing trends. They don’t always go for the most expensive option—but they always want the best, and they’re incredibly detail-oriented and selective about the services they use.
Our clients have great taste. Whether it’s the theme, the venue, or the overall aesthetic, there’s always an air of elegance and sophistication. And often, they’re also incredibly busy—many are new moms juggling babies and businesses or full-time jobs. They’re strong, capable women who inspire us, and it’s truly a joy to work with people who value quality, care, and creativity as much as we do.
