We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Chad Glover a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Chad, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I found my purpose by combining my passion for craftsmanship with my faith. My journey began back in 2003 while I was studying in college and working at GY Saddle and Tack in Marshall, Texas. There, I started making things out of leather, and I discovered a real joy in creating with my hands. Over the years, I’ve worked hard to hone my skills, making all sorts of things from leather and constantly seeking to improve. But what truly gave my work deeper meaning was my relationship with Jesus, which has drastically changed my life. Now, I see every project as a chance to work together with God to make art and share His love with others. My family and the opportunity to tell people about Jesus have helped me realize that my purpose is to use my craft to serve others and glorify God in everything I do.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Hi there! I’m a leather artisan based in Kansas City, originally from Texas, and I’m passionate about crafting unique, high-quality leather goods. While I’ve made many custom projects throughout my journey, I’ve discovered a special joy in perfecting a few signature designs and offering them to my customers. Every piece I create is made in small batches, so you’ll rarely find two exactly alike—each one carries its own character and story.
I still love collaborating with customers on custom projects, involving them in the creative process to make something truly one-of-a-kind. Quality and craftsmanship are at the heart of what I do. That’s why I mainly source leather tanned right here in the USA, and I’m especially proud to work with Herman Oak Leather from the oldest tannery in the country, located in St. Louis, MO. Every stitch and every cut reflects my commitment to excellence and my love for this craft.
If you’re looking for something unique, made with care, and rooted in American tradition, I’d love to create something special for you!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, the road to craftsmanship has been far from smooth. I’ve learned that mistakes are inevitable—we live in a flawed world, and problems will always arise. Through these experiences, three things have stood out as especially impactful:
Patience and Perseverance
I’ve taken apart almost as many projects as I’ve put together! Ha! Every setback taught me not to give up but to keep trying, learning, and improving. This patience and perseverance have been essential in developing my craft and overcoming obstacles.
Problem-Solving and Adaptability
When issues arise—whether in a project or in business—it’s not the problem itself but how you respond that matters. I’ve learned to approach challenges with a problem-solving mindset, adapting my methods and expectations as needed. Sometimes “Plan B” was better than “Plan A” and the problem is was led to “Plan B.”
Understanding the Difference Between Craft and Business
Craftsmanship is not the same as running a business. I’ve realized that while I love rolling out a new hide and getting to work, running a successful enterprise requires a different set of skills—like communication, planning, and customer service. Recognizing and embracing this distinction has been crucial for my growth.
Together, these qualities and insights have shaped my journey, helping me navigate both the creative and practical sides of my work.
How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
If I knew I only had ten years left, I honestly wouldn’t change much about the way I’m living my life right now. I’d continue to enjoy my relationship with Jesus by sharing His love and hope with others. I’d make special memories with my wife and three daughters, cherishing every moment we have together. I’d keep making things out of leather, finding joy in the creative process, and spending time outdoors, appreciating the beauty of God’s creation.
Most importantly, I’d want to help as many people as possible discover the joy of a relationship with Jesus and the fulfillment that comes from partnering with Him in whatever unique calling He’s given them—whether that’s leatherwork or any other “rad” thing in life! My hope would be to leave a legacy of faith, love, and encouragement, inspiring others to pursue their purpose with passion, confidence, and joy.
