We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful David Dilin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with David below.
Hi David, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I’m inherently competitive. I do a good job at hiding it now, but deep down, I can’t turn it off. It’s competition, growth, and evolution that fuel me a lot of the time. In fact, I used to be an average student in school. It wasn’t until I realized I was competing for spots in colleges that I took my grade point average from a 3.0 to a 4.2. It’s not my sole motivator, of course, but it’s a button that I know I can push. And I hope there’s a little competitiveness in everyone – it’s a strong way to grow. Always being better than yourself. You know, it’s less about comparison and more about evolution.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a poet at heart, but I translate my poetry through songs, so that also makes me a songwriter. I’m one of those people whose mind doesn’t turn off, plus I find interest in pretty much anything. This leads to a lot of interesting thoughts and the potential for infinite analogies – and I think that’s my blessing. Studying various languages, theology, sciences, etc., has given me a unique eye for the underlying themes of the world. I like to shed light on the analogous nature of the world, which is where I get my logo, as well as my motto See both sides – run in between them. I constantly want to make that thin line more visible, the analogy that may rest between dualities, the ridges that rest between two sides of the same coin, the corpus callosum that joins the two hemispheres of the brain. If you want to see this in action, find me at the Poetry with Purpose open mic, every 3rd Saturday of the month, at Rival Coffee in Murrieta. I’ve begun hosting and performing there.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
You’ve got to have skill, you have to know when to listen, and you have to take the opportunities that are given to you. My first poet mentor summed this first principle up in two words: “Be dope.” He told me never to explain a poem or introduce it, but just to get right to it. I’ve done that ever since, and it has allowed my talent to speak for itself. And that’s proof that listening is important, given the right context. Pay attention to those who knows that they’re doing, and everything they do will be a lesson – it’s your job to listen and be able to identify the who, what, where, when, and why. If you can do these first two things, then opportunities will come knocking. That’s your time to show off, no matter how big or small you think it may be. I’ve made big connections from small events and performed large events that resulted in a simple thank you. Never underestimate any opportunity.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I am always looking to collaborate. Like I mentioned earlier, I find interest in pretty much anything, so that has led to various pursuits, like designing, photography, editing, and so on. I firmly believe that iron sharpens iron, so it’s important to surround yourself with people from a variety of backgrounds, with various skillsets – you never know what beautiful art can come from it. The world needs us artists to collaborate. Feel free to reach out to me via email through admin@daviddilin.com or via a DM on Instagram @DavidDilin.
